Nightclub shoot...

I have been asked to film a DJ at a nightclub in the next couple of weeks. I will not be setting up any lights, just using whatever is in there now. I am sure its gonna be to dark for 24P unless I go and get an onboard camera light...any other tips or suggestions for shooting in a club as I am starting to pre plan my shoot.

I would get you and the camera in the night club as soon as possible. It could be tough. I play in a band and lighting is a real pain when using the DVX and 24PA. (But that's the only way I shoot with the DVX.) I love the camera but you really should talk to the DJ and explain he might want to spend some time before the shoot getting the lights (at least on himself) right for clean shots.

I dread walking into club shoots where red gels are all over the lights. They bleed all over the place. If there's a club light pointed right at the dj...check to see if the gels are red.

Hmm...I think there was a solution to this problem listed somewhere on there, but the search function didn't show it for me (I tried).

I just shot some stuff in a room that was lit solely by red neon. I was worried about the bleed, so I dropped my Chroma setting to -7. It looked REALLY good, no bleed at all on faces.

Hey thanks Hybrid and Aram! I needed that tip.

I have also been asked to follow a DJ at a nightclub for the next couple of weeks to make a promotional video for a website. I usually shoot sports outdoors with blue skies. I need some advice on settings to use with very low lighting. I have no control over the lighting other than my on camera light. As a general rule, people don't like the light. I try to stay away from it if I can. Any suggestions for settings in those conditions?

I would sugguest white balancing against a red card and having at least one 250 watt aimed at him.

yea dropping the chroma to -7 on aDVX Solves LOTS of problems. Like noise, chroma bleeding, chroma blocking..... i just like -7 period.

If you aren't getting the stop you need you can shoot at shutter 1/24. Its blurry but its better than 12db gain.

You don't always have to "light" something. If the DJ is dark then frame him so the background is lit. He will be silouhetted and it will probably be a better look then having a crappy on camera light pointed straight at him. Girls Gone Wild?

If you could ever swing it, Dedo lights run off small battery/ballasts and are amazing. They have a small footprint, no one would notice them, and they are very strong.

Have fun,

Matt
