Night Watch

They referred to it on AICN as:

"One of the greatest cool as hell films!"

Referred to it as a film with the magnitude of appeal like Dead Alive and Evil Dead 2, that the film is phenomenal, and they've done some new **** never done before with subtitles that'll probably be copied for years to come. I think i'm gonna be looking for this when it comes out.

Tha'ts cool, I remember downloading a super crappy quality old trailer for this several months ago, I guess it was really big in Russia when it came out, I look forward to catching it...

WOW. all i can say is WOW. what's it about though? It looks really coool. never seen anything like it. and it's gonna be a trilogy? damn!

with subtitles? how interesting can you get with subtitles?

I'm confused...the credits at the end said music by...somebody Russian... But the music at the beginning of the trailer was by Brian Eno.

Wanna see it, of course. Vali doesn't...she's afraid of scary movies. Hee hee hee.

omg... didn't know it was coming out in US

Guys, don't even bother watching it, seriously. It was one of the most talked about movies last year here (hell probably last 10 years)... with the most common descriptions being "Our answer to the Hollywood", "First Russian blockbuster" and such. It's based on a very popular sci-fi book series and the book author also participated in production (not as close as Frank Miller on SC though), so it's very close to the original although it combines elements from several stories (think Master&Commander). At that moment it had biggest budget for a movie in Russia ever and also biggest box office ($16 mil). Sequel "Day Watch" is in production atm.

It's about vampires, witches, werewolfes and also fairies, mages, and all those fellas living in our modern life world. Ages ago they agreed to keep their business under strict rules those being watched by 2 organisations: Day Watch (that controls the good guys during the day) and Night Watch (that, on the opposite, controls the bad guys during the night). Well, that's what the books are about. The movie tries to be Blade-style action (in the ways of good guys fighting the superficial scum), Constantine-style thriller (with it's dark and more realistic, and religious way of showing good/evil... not that there was Constantine movie to copy at that time, just using it as example), modern days human drama and even sometimes an epic. In the end it comes out to be total mess. A 2-something hours long BORRRING mess that doesn't make any sense.

About the effects every was talking about. A few of them are nice, some are completely laughable, but ALL of them we have already seen in other movies. And if you watched that trailer you have seen almost everything the movie has to offer - yes, they showed ALL the sfx with a couple of exceptions being very long Fincher'ish style shots (with the camera crawling through walls, following wires etc.), that just wouldn't fit in the 2 mil trailer.

I watched it once and I have absolutely no intentions to watch it ever again.

well that was certainly anti-climatic.

so what do they do with the subtitles? just well designed fonts?

errr couldn't be anything unique or original or I would have remembered. Everything in the movie was borrowed one way or the other.

Someday someone will make an original movie. Then all of us will be happy. But I still want to see this.

Or they could just fund each member of DVX users own film projects :)

It does look tight! I'm sure the movie sucks but I'm still down to see it.

xl70e3, is there a DVD out of this? If so, hook it up.. :)

I could, but it would be in Russian  (no subtitles either)

Hey, I don't mind learning another language. I'm used to watching movies with no sound because we were so poor we couldn't afford ears.

This sounds like the same experience I had with Immortel. It looked really cool, but I couldn't finish watching it -- it was too bizarre for me.

The problem with this one is that it doesn't even look cool... It only has a handful of good effects and even those seem misplaced and don't add a thing to the story. SFX for the sake of SFX, just to show "WE CAN DO THAT"... who cares if you can? Fight Club did a lot of that stuff 5 years earlier but it was there for a reason. Oh and that one scene with the truck rolling over is killer. I don't know what kind of idiot decided to put that in - not only it further proves the point that all the sfx in Night Watch is pure show off (because the whole sequence is meaningless, the movie could do with out np) but it also looks like crap - there is NO way it would land on the wheels after that flip, just play it frame by frame. And they claim they spent like 6 or 8 months on that single effect...
I'm sorry if you all got tired of me trying to talk you out of watching this and if you're tired of me bashing it... it's just that this movie was practically everywhere this past summer - you couldn't get away from it. TVs, magazines, people talking about it... and then I watched it and it was bs, but nooo they kept talking about it... and then they thought "Hey, this thing is Oscar worthy!" and put it up for nomination instead of a couple of really beatiful, great movies that came out same year... I'm not kidding. They really put Sci-fi thriller up for Oscar nomination....... And now when I saw this thing pop up on my favourite forum, I just got all pissed, sorry.

I ran this movie a couple weeks ago and at first it looked kind of interesting. But then the story just got retarted and just dragged on.

The subtitles do look really cool. Most of then interact with the characters and change depending on the word. But I've never seen subtitles like this movie did. If for anything else sneek in and watch a bit just so you can see what I'm talking about. But please don't waste your money. Believe everything xl70e3 said about it...he's right no the money.
