Night time shooting

Hello all, im hoping someone can give me a bit of advice for a short film im planning on making early next year, and have been looking at the panasonic HVX200 to shoot on. Unfortunatly I am new to this and espcially when it concerns lighting. The short is based at night in a warehouse and during a blackout, so the look im aiming for would consist of a lot of it in complete black with the only light sources being from a torch or flame for example. I would exagerate this light to cover more area though. But I am unsure what would be the best way to do this? Maybe I should light the whole place with the intention of bringing down the light in post, but then would have the problem with the onscreen light sources. Im not even sure the camer is the best choice but im feeling the 720p. Sorry for waffling but I see there are some very clued up people out there and hope someone can help. Cheers

Actually, I'm interested in this as well. I'm going to be shooting a short that is outdoors at night using simple bright spots that act as "headlights". Anything that any body can offer in terms of lighting at night would be helpful!

The biggest problem your going to get is that the blacks tend to get noisy with the hvx.

to offset this you need to either have a reasonably ambient light source, adn then as you said bring it down in post, or make sure that you highlights are very well exposed so that the noise is less noticable. your still going to have to tweak it in post but that could work.

Although the aesthetic sounds good, you might have trouble in that if you essentially have all images in a one spatial distance from the camera, you have a hard time creating any depth. How most lighting setup are done in this instance is to create the illusion of night. In that there is acually a lot of highlights, and shadows, but not to much mid tone. The TV show "supernatural" is a very good example of this. They do a lot of stuff at night, and this sounds like the aesthetic you might be trying to go for. watch some of the night scenes from that and that might help you out a bit.

Just my 2c
