Nice Entry!

Yep, proving once again that tape is dead! (oh man, sounds like my record is broken...)

Kind of a baby Viper. Without any sort of 24p it'll probably not generate too much interest on these boards, but I think it's excellent to see more companies raising the bar and embracing the nonlinear acquisition model.

A Baby Viper? How about, "Panasonic watch out!"

Infinity records 1080i60 and 720p60 in the JPEG-2000 format (4:2:2, 10-bit) to affordable compact flash cards. Oh, did I mentioned the camera is priced at a new industry low of $19,000USD?

As you may have heard, JPEG-2000 has been declared the most future proof digital media archive format by a recent study. That the new Infinity camera system will be using this format says a lot in terms of the intended market for it: news aquisition.

For all intents and purposes, it's an AJ-HDX400 for half price.
Though, you are right about the lack of 24P being a total deal breaker for this community...

It only temporarily has a lack of 24p capability. No official announcement has been made yet of course, but their sales reps mentioned an upcoming 24p feature.

I was reading a document about the Varicam, and it says that even if you record at 720p60, you can transfer to 720p24 using their framerate converter tool.
So if you shoot 720p60 with this camera, then you could get 720p60 in post, right?

Yes because the Varicam always records in 60i so you can make what you want later. As for 24p in cameras that don't make it, you can use Natress software to make more controllable 24p than you can in a camera. It works very well with HDV allowing you to make 24p instead of the cine style Sony offers. Not having 24p is far from death.

Is JPEG 2000 less compressed than MPEG 2? How would it compare to DVCProHD codec? Does any current NLE support JPEG 2000.

Also, I didn't see a chip size for the GV. Looks like it could be a great camera.

Cheers,
Chris

It says 45 mins recording onto 35 GB, so it is ~100Mb/s, so about the same as DVCPROHD bitrate wise. However I would think the quality will be higher, as it is a more advanced codec.
