NHK Introduces New, Compact 8k Camera and Real Time Encoder.

Yeah, with a proto-type it would calculate into Millions of Yen for sure.

Even when productized... I'm sure it will be well outside of my budget... and any one I may know, their budget too...
(what is interesting is that while the 'camera' looks to be just enough housing to support the lens mount and sensor... the 'processing' unit looks to be a 19" rack mounted affair... not something one usually likes to go into the 'wild' with...).

At this point I really do wonder about the 'real' usefulness of 8K... as 8K... I can see using 8K then via subsampling and filtering, allow for better 'jaggy/moire' management...

I think for the 'consumer' level product, better dynamic range, and perhaps fuller 4:4:4 color sampling, is the 'next big thing'... at popular prices... with 2k/HD spatial sampling...

I can't help but think about NHK's work at trying to get analog HD going in the late 1980's. That pretty much came to naught. At least they are thinking BIG!

The NHK name carries with it the implied responsibility to innovate. If you have a TV set in Japan, NHK comes to your house weather you like it or not and you must pay for it i.e. you buy a TV you instantly subscribe to NHK when you turn it on at home. They are also the National broadcaster. They need to have something no one else has, its a matter of pride almost.

8k? Well certainly 4k is closer to being broadcast with H.265 innovations in compression. Not sure many global networks are ready or willing to deal with the data in the backend, but its early days and data storage and pipelines drop in price every minute.

No Im still going to say the best innovations for today are with the TV manufacturers and the built in upressing hardware they have - read cheap non brand units dont have it. This is for tomorrow.
