similar in price, which is more common to video use. ive heard good for both. looked at search. still not sure which one to buy????

TLC, I'm not trying to sound ornery here...I've really sworn off that...

But, do you mean the Rode NTG2 vs. the Oktava Mk-012? If so, you're looking at apples and celery. The Rode is a shotgun mic, primarily used for outdoor work with proper wind protection, and the MK-012 is, depending on which capsule you buy, probably a hypercardioid, and primarily used for interior shots. I have not used the Rode, but recently someone here said it was crappy. I have used the Octava and love it for what it is good at, interiors.

A note to all future posters - please be a bit more specific to your needs and to the brands you are talking about in order to get the best qualified answers here. There are a couple of mics that go without saying which brand...for example the 416, but for the novices that populate our forum, I recommend you always spell it out...even that obnoxious T.H.E. ;-) (and that isn't that hard....) And, if you can't figure out how to spell Sennheiser, then Senn. will work too. ;-)

Definitely...Oktava for indoors ..there are samples online to hear..and you will notice the difference when hearing side by side.

thanks for the info. im a pro audio guy that is getting into the video/audio world, i purchased the oktava mk-012 with all 3 heads. what is a good medium priced outdoor mic to use on the dvx100b? im new to the search and still have a bit of trouble getting to where i want to go, great site i ordered the dvxbook, looking forward to diving into it for help.

is it me or does the 100b look as little cheaply built on the exterior, i guess i was expecting a little more rigidity to it. i currently use an xl1. it looks a bit more expensive..

The Rode NTG-2 seems to be rather popular as a medium-priced shotgun mic; its sound quality is comparable to some much more expensive microphones!

I've been very happy with my NTG-2 as an entry-level shotgun. AT 4073a is a popular recommendation for the next mic up the money ladder.
