Next VFX fest?

Ok, guys. We've gotten the attention of the mods on Mount Olympus and the result is that we are going to actually be splitting this into two separate programs. Matt will be heading up a series of "workshops" of brief duration and intended to focus on elements that have great practicality for a wide range of members. I'll let him define the content of these "workshops" because it appears his schedule is going to give him enough time to devote to them in the near term. At the same time I am going to be setting up a major VFX Fest that will be a challenge with a timeline measured in months instead of weeks. IF we can get some reasonable participation, we've been promised sponsorships and prizes that should provide some extra motivation.

Mattykins and Raptor365 have made some very salient points that I'm going to be taking into account. In fact, I will be conferring with both of them this week and I appreciate their interest and support for a challenge that can stretch people's abilities and appeal to their creative senses.

I hope you all can forgive me for being out of touch for the past month. We were wrapped up with finishing our short film O2 and hosting the DVXUSER film festival at Cinespace in Hollywood. Since Fat Monster Films isn't going to enter the next fest I should be able to devote some serious time to getting the VFX Challenge back on the rails. I appreciate the help all of you can give us to making this an exciting and worthwhile endeavor for all.

Count me in! Sounds like a reasonable compromise and should ensure some serious participation. IMO, a bit more exposure in other parts of the dvxuser site would help with participation as well.

Thanks to all who have a hand in making this happen. Looking forward to it!!

I've been looking at the www.digitaldomain.com reels. Love those guys.

A side note:

One of the guys in that Caribbean movie, the guy on the ship, lives a few miles from here. The pirate with the beard who looks like a bum, er, pirate. He also steers the 'wheel' in the film.

He's a local Lawyer and was vacationing in Bermuda during the shoot and I think his niece asked him to try out for an extra. Hell, they liked him so much they almost made him a movie star.
He looks the part, that's for sure. Pretty funny in a way.

Fire up the fest when ready Mark. Looking forward to it.

It's a good idea. But I think that's about as far as it goes.
If it dies it dies.

I mean, really there is no popular demand for it at this time.
I'd say ditch it.

I can't ever remember what I said but pretty sure it was stupid.
I need a vaction from this stuff for awhile.
Might try some fishing today, or go out and see a band today or something.

Raptor, I might have to agree with you here.

Might be best to hold it. Not kill it per se, but hold it.

Maybe come the first of the year we can kick it off right. I mean - if someone wants to discuss it and see what can be done with it - I would love to see what I can do. But I say hold it till next year. Come december I will have a lot of time to do stuff, this might become one of my missions.

Really good idea Matt. Not a good time of year. I think a lot of people are wrapping up summer projects and such. I know Mark is insanely busy right now. I've had my humble share and a few left to finish and this time of year is always stressfull, at least I find that. Next new year sounds good to me.

Give Mark a shout and see what you guys want to put together. I'm game. :)

If it's not running by new year, I'll consult Mattykins and set something up. Big prizes or not, either way, we'll try it again.

At any rate, look for New Years if nothing else happens.

Like we said, I have no issues with teaming up with Raptor and setting up a fest. My website could host information and such.

I'll have a lot of time in december. So something should happen that will make everyone happy.
