Hello,

Just wanted to greet everyone and say thanks for all the info i've found so far here. I just got off the phone with evs and now im on the list...waiting for what the majority of you are.... a hvx200!!!!

I've had several sony vx1000's and used them on a regular basis for skateboard video production. The camera worked great for that but now im finding intrest in subjects outside skateboarding, and i figured i should go with something top quality and after hours of research of everything i could find out there i've decided on the hvx200. the vx1000 is a great camera but it doesnt cut it for the film look i want to achieve.

So yeah im really excited to be apart of this forum to learn and share info with everyone.

i've been shooting skateboarding ever since i was a kid so about 6 years. About the past 3 years i've been contributing footage to different companies, and now im filming for my own video.

filming skateboarding is fun. its a challenge cause you need to be a good skater and have knowledge about whats going on to get the right shots. Not to mention your camera constantly has skateboards flying at it so you gotta be quick to so ur equipment doesnt get busted, but recently while i was on a trip to san francisco my camera was broken pretty bad. I sent it off for repairs and when the estimate came back for 3800 dollars my insurance wasnt happy cause they only cover the camera for 3000. so in the end i got a check from them for 3000 bucks. thats why im now getting a hvx200

sony vx1000

and for fisheye shots i used the century optics .3x fisheye

i didnt like the results of the vx2000 or 2100 so that is why i never upgraded. also the century optics fisheye doesnt create the same effect on the 2000 or 2100.

not until i saw some footage my friend shot with his dvx100a ( http://www.austencollins.com/video/kevinshort.mov ) was i ever inclined to get a new camera... then i learned about the hvx200 so now im waiting for the ultimate. plus im more interested in other subjects and documentaries now. The vx1000 is just finally out dated in my opinion when i comes to prosumer cameras. and i never really like the shape of the canon xl series so thats why i never went that route either.

what im really interested is how the picture will look with the century fisheye on the hvx200... im curious how it will look in the 16:9 aspect ratio. i am aware that they are releasing some sort of ultimate fisheye pretty soon. im really curious how that is going to look. you can check it out here http://www.centuryoptics.com/ on the right where it says "whats new" there is a picture of it on the sony hd cam.

im sick of seeing 80percent of skateboard shots done with the fisheye. but for some stuff it is necessary so its something i'll need in the future

Just curious, why do you feel the VX1000 is better than the VX2000?
Why doesn't the fisheye look the same?

I was wondering why I still see so many people using the VX1000 for skate videos.

I've had my VX1000 for about 6 years, and I'm gonna be selling soon.
Possibly going for the HVX as well, but I won't decide untill I can try one out.

a.King, thanks for the order! I appreciate your business.

As far as the fisheye, I saw it over at Cinegear this year. It was truly incredible, because it gave something of a 170 degree field of vision with minimal distortion for that much viewing space. It really didn't look so much like a fisheye, but like a super wide that can see all around. It was incredible. And that was the prototype too... 16:9 just makes it look better, because it is less distorted when the format already supports a wider horizontal view.

bill,

the vx1000 is just a better camera for filming skateboarding. I know for a fact something is not the same when it comes to the colors between the vx1000 and the 2000. the daytime colors look great on the vx1 but on the 2 they look cheesy almost. the footage looks way too digital especially on a sunny day the blues just look like **** and im sorry i cant pinpoint it but if you look at it side by side you'll see what im talking about.

as for the fisheye. that century optics lens works the best on the vx1. i dont know if it was cause it was the first camera they made it for or what. but the distortion is perfect on the vx1. on the vx2 its not as wide with that lens but seems to have more distortion.... really weird.

Also the vx1 is just the PERFECT body for filming skateboarding. its balanced really well for it. cause with filming skateboarding a lot of the shots you are riding on your board behind the skater and you have to be filming and skating at the same time.... so to do this you have to be holding the camera low with the fisheye... usually with the camera slightly tilted up. and the vx1 even with that huge lens on it still naturally wants to tilt upwards when you hold it from the handle.... so it works perfect. also its a tuff camera

the only thing i liked about the vx2 was filming at night without the fisheye.... the vx2 does have better night time shooting.

i cant wait for that fisheye! but i have a good feeling its gonna be around 2500 dollars.... a lot more than the previous 800

and hey bill........ I may be intersted in buying your vx1. that was my first and favorite camera ever. hahah i have a tattoo of it on the inside of my arm!!! and mine was just broke in half... so yeah i want one.

You would skateboard with a 13 thousand dollar camera? (HVX+P2+170degreeHDfisheye)
YOU ARE VERY BRAVE! MAYBE YOU SHOULD CONSIDER AN ARRI 16S!

hahah yeah. and i plan to do that! i've skated my whole life. its something you get used to. and i cant wait for the quality of the hvx with the new fisheye in 16:9 its gonna be something the skateboard video community has never seen.

you can get great results on a skateboard.... especially rolling around shooting without the fisheye. looks awesome! its like my own personal dolly. although you have to have skated for a long time and feel really comfortable rolling on the board. and once you do. you can get some wild rolling shots. hes a great example. this is one of the best skateboard filmers ..... www.frenchfred.com but jump to this link if you want to see what im talking about.... rolling with no fisheye... getting shots that look professional but only using a skateboard and a vx1000..... http://www.frenchfred.com/video/digital/ll.html

yeah, thats the style im into. if you really want to see a well put together video go and pick up "First Love" its a video by Transworld Media. You could get it at any skate shop probably.

its an awesome video with filming and a style similar to that little short i showed you. It also has good voice overs and a story behind the whole thing talking about skateboarding as their first love.

a.King, great stuff! Wow dude, that is some purposed well shot skate video. How do you achieve your moving shots? With a crane, steadicam? Especially the ones where you track the guys down the handrail, from the back. Excellent beginning middle and end on the static skating, very unique!

Seriously? Wow... How does he stop like that without bumping the camera forward? Skill? Coo.

I don't think these were from a.King

But I agree; niceely done and so cool without the bullshit music screaming in your face. I'm still amazed at these kids who don;t wear any protection whatsoever. Oh that's right; it's not cool to wear protection.

The VX1000 is such an epic camera. I know the feeling King! It's hard to quantify.

Some have said that the setup value was made at 7.5 instead of 0 IRE. So, that may be it: teh high setup gives a softer feeling, and takes the edge off video color.

keep shooting the VX,

-a

whoa whoa. haha that footage isnt from me. i said "heres some footage from one of the best skateboard filmers"

but yeah those shots are all done with a vx1 and rolling on a skateboard... obviously this takes a lot of skateboarding skill.

ill post some stuff of my filming soon, i just need to put together someting new since im sick of all my old stuff. its like a never ending cycle. ill make something then get over it.
