Newby needs advise Macbook pro or power mac

First time post. Planning on buying a mac notebook for FCP. Pros/cons of buying Macbook pro vs Powermac g4. Is the g4 going to be obsolete soon? What should i invest in? Student switching to mac. Which is the wiser investment?
 
The new/used PPC G4 based notebooks have not depreciated in value as much as they need to make purchasing one a bargain, just a quick browse through the Apple refurbished page reveals this. That said, even when the used prices do come down (there won't be many new for long - SUCKERS), they probably won't come down far enough to justify buying a PPC (power PC) over a CD (Core Duo) notebook. Upshot - get the Macbook Pro.
 
Well alright. Thanks for making it much more clear. Any comments about the the recent problems with the Macbook pro hissing or making unexpected noises?
 
I have one and there's no problem with hissing. Sometimes it can freeze though. 5.1.1 is a little glitchy when going back to older files that had color correction back when it was corrected on 5.0.
 
You should get your MacBook Pro after the new ones come out, do not get one now. Apple is going to be putting the new Merom (Conroe mobile) CPU's into its Laptops soon from what I hear and for the increase in performance ide say wait. As previously stated G4's (powerbooks) haven't dropped in price much and the performance increase with the new systems is very significant. I say MacBook Pro when the new ones come out. It will give you better performance and judging by the drop in MacPro price in the standard config, they might be slightly cheaper. A current MBP would still be a good choice but if you can wait a month or so do, you'll be happy you did. I could buy one right now, but im waiting.

Thanks kyle. I didnt know a new line of MBP's were coming out so soon. I think ill wait a couple of months to see what apple has to offer.
