Newbie with a stupid question

I'm new to computer editing and was wondering if there is any deteroration of the material the more times you watch it? Or with ones and zero's is that a non-issue?

Is it better quality to master your finished product back to tape or DVD? Do many people online their stuff after doing an offline cut on FCP? What should I be aware of in case we want to do that?

If I have a timecode break how does that affect importing and how do I prevent timecode breaks?

Thanks for the time to answer this.

I am no authority, but here are some of my thoughts.

If your original material is on tape, I would recommend you capture it as soon as possible. Once it is captured digitally it will not deteriorate.

You should backup your original files digitally. Tape can go bad and dvd is a compressed format.

As for timecode breaks, they happen. You can try capturing again and again. I have had some luck with repeated tries, but inevitably with tape, at some point, you will lose time code (that is one of the main reasons why I switched to the HVX).

Good luck,

Chris

I had a tape someone else recorded that was full of time breaks and I couldn't get it into my computer. What I eventually did was to play it using my ZR100 (using it as a deck) into my QuickCapture unit as I would when I capture to it directly from the DVX. I got some clean digital files that I could then work with...
