newbie to Final cut.

hello. just after some general advice. I shoot with a panasonic DVX100 & have just invested in a G4 laptop. I'm now gathering some software. from what I read Final cut is the way to go regarding an editing tool.
I have little experience so whatever I buy will be a big learning curve.
Unfortunately money is an issue so what would you advise regarding which version of FCP to buy?express; studio, 4, 4.5, 5.???
How much difference is there?
What other programmes should I be looking at as well? (if any)
Simple advice please I've been reading up on various sites and feel a bit overwhelmed.

I just have to say....get FCP 5!

Why get all this equipment and have an old version of Final Cut Pro?

I know money is an issue, but you will have to upgrade sooner or later!

Final Cut Studio is nice if you want to make DVD's since it comes with DVD Studio Pro and Compressor....do you have a superdrive on your G4?

Soundtrack Pro is also a nice addition in FC Studio.

Motion is also cool....but your computer has to be fast to utilize it.

Apple + Education ? Big Discount

Definately get at least FCP 5. If you look around in the forums you will see the misery of other people trying to get iMovie and FCP Express to do things they are not intended to do (i.e. work with 24p).
 
Here's a little trick some friends have been using for a while. Go on ebay, hunt down an older version of FCP for sale. Make sure it is legit. Buy em up cheap and then buy the upgrade. Save yourself some flow.

FCP 4.5
Motion
Soundtrack
DVD Studio Pro

Just been looking at FCP5, seems to come in package with Motion2, soundtrack & studio Pro. Could someone give a very brief overview of what the other programmes do.
 
I've just gotten into the Mac and FCP world (hence my numerous annoying posts).

If you can get the Educational discount for FCP and Studio, you should go for it.
This is an extremely powerful tool.
