Newbie: Rendering Question

Is there some way to tell if a clip is still being rendered?

I made some changes to the BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST, as well as PROC AMP, to a clip that is no more than a couple minutes long... when I play it back, it now appears jittery with rough edges. When I pause it, the image looks very clear -- until I play it again.

The small line above it looks green to me... shouldn't that mean it has been rendered?

If it HAS been rendered -- and I've got a jittery, rough mess -- what could I have done to cause this... is it likely a glitch... or user error? If so, what should I do to fix it?

Do you mean, go to SEQUENCE > RENDER SELECTION ?

If so, yes... that's what I did to render it. Problem is, it has been a while now and I can't tell for sure if it is done... it doesn't appear to have any good way of showing the progress of the render.

And the clip still plays back rough and jittery.

Check your sequence playback settings, as well as your RT settings. If the images is perfect on a still, and jittery and low-res on playback, then FCP is either (a) doing dynamic RT, reducing the quality to keep up with Real Time playback, or (b) your sequence settings are such that playback framerate or frame size is smaller than normal.

Okay... so, I'm checking my Playback Settings in SEQUENCE > SETTINGS.

I'm not sure where to access the RT settings.

So, I hate to admit it... but now that I'm there, what exactly am I looking for... what are the red flags I should look at changing?

Also, I don't think I said this earlier, but I made these same changes to a shorter clip just an hour before this clip... it plays back fine... it is just this longer clip I am experiencing this with... in case that helps!

The RT settings are off the little "RT" button on the sequence window. You can choose dynamic playback quality or higher playback quality. Looks from your description like you're set to dynamic? The Playback settings are a tab off "Sequence Settings." For all the details, assuming you're using FCP 5.x, see in the manual, Part III, p. 509, "Using RT Extreme," and Part III p, 533 "Rendering".
