Newbie - Recorder Question

Good afternoon. I have been lurking for a while. This site in general has often been a useful source of information at my job, and I finally decided to join.

Lately, I have been researching various audio solutions, as I want to get more involved with creating short videos/films. Audio was always the most complicated seeming part to me, and despite knowing that audio is at least as important to a film as the visuals, it was the part I knew the least about.

Anyway, after much research on this site and several others, I have sort of decided on picking up a Rode NTG-3, and a Sound Devices MixPre. I'll be monitoring on a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50s (ordered them today - $9). However, I really haven't been able to decide on a recorder to pair with these. I constantly hear about the Zoom H4n, and only slightly less often hear about the Tascam DR-100. However, as I plan on getting the MixPre, I don't need the preamps and such from these two popular recorders.

I've been curious about using either a Zoom H1, Olympus LS-10, Tascam DR-07, or the Sony M10. Correct me if I am wrong, but as long as the link from the MixPre is short enough, it won't really matter that the connection is over 3.5mm plugs? Since the MixPre is going to be my front end, will the more expensive Sony or Olympus units really make much of a different versus the sub-$100 Zoom or Tascam?

Later I plan on adding a hyper-cardioid (which I seem to be much more confused on versus the shotgun, but was considering the AT4053, the Audix SCX-1, or the NT5?).

Before asking, you should really search the forum. Most of the frequent contributors have elaborated on this topic to no end and you'll find plenty of information there to help with your decision. Good luck.

I did try searching, but so many threads popped up, and seem to focus more on the H4n and the Dr-100, or higher end stuff. I also found endless discussions on mics (and that helped my decision towards the NTG-3).

To shorten it up some...

Go with a solid recorder like the Marantz PMD-661, Fostex Fr-2LE or similar that supports true line in. Why get all that nice gear and then use a crap recorder? In fact, why buy any of it at all? Hire someone who knows what they are doing, or find an up-and-coming production sound mixer/boom-op, or rent. Why the obsession with owning something you'll use three time a year?
