hi, i'm a student, broke and passion for filmmaking..
i have panasonic ag-dvx100b and after the purchase been living off 'instant' food products alot.. haha
i have a quick question, i am currentlying working on a documentary and was looking to get a microphone (shotgun) for interview purposes.. ntg-2, me66 etc etc seems like a good mics but i came across ATR55 from audio-technica.. for around 50dollars..
is this any good??? (i know the golden rule is u get what u paid for but if it's any improvement over the built-in microphone on dvx100b and good starting microphone to learn with.. i might just grab this for now and save money for better ones later...)

any help would be appreciated!!
thank u

Okay, I may catch flak for this, but what the heck...

First, I recommend against the ME66 if you're going to be doing any kind of interviewing indoors. I used the ME66 on a feature shoot and was really disappointed in the results. I understand the Oktava MK012 is far superior, and a whole lot cheaper than the ME66.

But to answer your question -- I think you might be able to get away with using the ATR55 for a documentary. I edited a no-budget short that used this mic, and it wasn't horrible. I don't think I'd use it on a feature, but it might be passable for a documentary. I'd certainly give it a try.

Hey, give some thought to maybe doing a music video or two to make a few bucks so you can at least indulge in Chef Boyardee once in awhile. :-)

Good luck!

Mic suggestion

I just bought a Peluso CEMC-6 with a hyper cardiod capsule to go with the supplied cardiod capsule. I own a Schoeps CMIT 5U shotgun mic which was very expensive but to me worth it. Wanted to own the Schoeps hypercardiod mic to use indoors but couldn't afford it too. Its more money than their shotgun. I am very impressed with the Peluso mic so far... just got it today. It will definately be an excellant indoor interview mic, and a good music recording mic as well. Got it from Sound Pure and paid $360 for it including shipping. I've used the Schoeps hyper alot so I know how it sounds and this mic compares very favorably. Will need a better windscreen, but I'm pumped to use this on a shoot!

Bernie
