it provides a system of marking the focus points to repeat them at any time, and alows someone to operate it from a distance with a "whip" which is a flexible cable with a knob at the end that plugs into the focus knob. it also provides even, and very precie focusing through the smooth and fluid movement of the mechanism. also if the cam operator is pulling focus him/her self, its physically easier to turn a knob oriented like the follow focus, than it is to rech up around the focus ring, and turn it. without shaking the camera around. even if you put your hands up and pretend like your turning a knob like the follow focus vs reaching around the focus ting, you can see how much easier it is, and how much more steady you can be in the motion required for a follow focus.
also they can make your camera look cooler, and more professional, which can get your talent to stop screwing around, and take the production more seriously.. this may seem stupid, but believe me. if your crew or talent dosnet think your professional, and take you seriously, your production will suffer unlike anything you coulve ever imagined. so anything you can do to stop that from happening is a good thing.
