i just got AE cs3 and opened it for the first time today. never used it before.

when i import my 720p/24fps video clip into it i can't play it back without it being extra slow and a green line forming over top the timeline as if it is rendering.

can i not play clips back at regular speed or am i doing something wrong?

i set up the composition as dvcprohd 720 23.976...am i missing something?

AE is not meant for real time play-back...sorry.

to improve playback without rendering, try decreasing the preview quality.

Unlike programs such as Premiere and Vegas, AE does not use the clip's codec during playback. Also, is gives non-interlaced frames with interlaced footage (for better quality) so that bites into the playback as well.

Even though your footage isn't 60i, you probably have footage requiring a pulldown, which also will give you a CPU hit.

Ram preview is the only way to see real time video, which makes sense, since you could be doing a lot (through filters and other manipulation) to the video, and that requires a hell of a lot of processing.

Get as much ram as you can.

also a question regarding the preview...

I did tryout the CS3 and I found it way to slow for my pc. Wondering if there will be any help if I try the other older Version of AE ? like AE 7 ?

BAH! You kids and your 20 TeraHertz machines!!!

I remember using AE on a 33 mHz 68040 Mac Quadra 950! While walking uphill in the snow in my bare feet!!!
