Newbie needs help with output

I'm totally new to video and demoing Vegas Platinum 9 (Not pro). I've used the 'how to' tips and gotten my first test done, looks fine in preview, even at best, but when I render and 'try'--"I'm a PC" LOL--in Media Player--its very dark (music fine). I've googled and discovered this isn't unusual--and I can adjust brightness and contrast (I use a calibrated monitor--long time still photographer using Photoshop and other graphics apps), but--I would like to see what I will get before I upload to someplace like Vimeo. Any tips as to what viewer I could use??--or just assume that my output will be as it looks like in Vegas.

I'm also trying to figure out from Vimeo's FAQs what I should use to upload. I save the render to my harddrive and will upload from there. Tips appreciated. I really need more than the help files on Vegas--I couldn't find what i needed in index or search--so guess I will buy the Vegas 8 book for now.

Thanks all,
Diane

Just a question though, are you saying that after you render it appears dark when viewing on the same monitor you used to color?I didn't understand that part.

Thanks--yes. Strange, no??? I suspect it is an MS Media Player issue, but don't know. It looks just fine in the preview window of Vegas--as shot. Can the settings one chooses for output have any effect on the output--to make it different than what the preview shows?? I understand filter, plugins, etc.--used none. I only used text on a transparent layer, added music---simple enough, no?? I may just upload to Vimeo and see what happens.

Thanks again for that link. I've looked at the FAQs and found nothing to help me here--but I can use any other help to get me started. Especially with terms which are pretty foreign to a still photographer.

Gamma can change. Black/white levels can shift. Depends on encoder. If you export to WMV, then preview with WMP only. Upload a small piece and compare to your Vegas clip. You may need to adjust black/white levels with something like "computer to studio RGB" levels preset.

AFAIK, non-Pro Vegas does not have scopes monitor, so the best you can do is grab a still from Vegas, drop it into Photoshop and check levels. Then grab a still from the rendered clip and do the same. Compare. Correct. ;-) Again, correcting in Vegas Studio is hard because it does not display levels (AFAIK).

Thanks--my output in Vimeo proved to be the same as Vegas preview so that was helpful. I shoot in RAW for stills--and process, so now will have a lot more to consider and how. Terminology and software like encoder, frame rates, codec, etc.---are new for me so I'm feeling my way. Maybe Vegas isn't the right software for me--but there are limitations since I'm on PC.

Check Media Player

Check Media Player

but when I render and 'try'--"I'm a PC" LOL--in Media Player--its very dark

I do the same thing and my Media Player (Ver. 11) shows the Vegas output A-OK.

My guess is there is something wacked with your Media Player, although I have no idea what it might be. Have you tried getting a video from the net, playing it in Media Player, and then loading the same video into Vegas and seeing what it looks like there? That might help identify where the problem is.

No, I rarely use Medai player for video and found that if I adjusted brightness/contrast I could easily duplicate Vegas output. Wish I could save as preset in MP, but haven't found a way.

The tutes are great. Having used a lot of graphics apps, many things are relatively intuitive. The terminolgy isn't, but its just a case of understanding it. So far, Vegas and I are getting along LOL.
