Newbie, How to Focus with M2

Hello All,

I am about to try a Redrock M2 Adapter and I would like to know 2 things:

Is it true that the image will be upside down

Will I focus using the HVX 200 focus or will I focus with the rings of the 35mm lense

If the image is upside down, how do I deal with it?

Thanks,

Karle

I probably would have asked the same question.

You focus on the ground glass with the hvx200 lens (the projected image from the 35mm lens) Then tape off your zoom and focus ring with gaffers tape so it doesnt change while filming. You then focus with the 35mm lens in front. Thats it, have fun!

p.s. make sure you zoom in to the little image circle with the hvx to avoid black edges, check on a monitor to make sure they aren't in your shot.

AND!

The image is upside down, you either have to preform a "flip-hack" (details @ cinevate.com) or use some sort of external monitor to see the upright image. (or buy a flip unit from letus or cinevate)

Backfocus is when you focus the HVX on the adapter ground glass. Once you have your HVX focus and zoom set, make sure they don't move. Focus and zoom (zoom, if you are using a zoom lens) is controlled with the 35mm lens.

Not all adapter shoot the image upside down. Letus offers a flipped adapter, brevis offers a flip module to go along with their adapter, and Redrock has the MicroX flip module to go with the M2 which should hopefully be out sometime soon.

sorry, just a side question that came to my mind, can you zoom at all with the orignial lense built into the camera (my a1)?

You can do that to a certain degree, but it may make the grain on the GG more visible. More importantly though, you are changing the field of view of the SLR lens when you do this. Meaning that if you are using a 50mm lens and you zoom in past where you need to, it will be more like using a 85mm or 100mm lens.

Different focal lengths have different perspectives, and you will be operating outside of the proscribed use for each lens. Not that this is a bad thing per se, but it is probably best for you to learn the way lenses are meant to be used before you start experimenting with alternative uses. That way you will have a deep understanding of when and how to use each lens in your arsenal.

what is the best way to process the footage then (to un-reverse it)? If you see it upside down on the monitor, then I assume it is recorded that way. I have premiere pro, After effects and a firestore recorder at my disposal.

with a quick search in the forums, you will find everything you need plus more. These questions have been addressed many times before.

Please explain the rationale

Please explain the rationale

Hi, just a little explanation here:

I understand that the whole forum thing is often like going to the local starbucks to socialize with a few friends. The good thing is that you might not have so many like minded people next to your house.

Going through the forum and searching for something specific takes time. Have you tried a search with "Redrock M2 upside down?". If Shooting video was my breadwinner, I would not mind spending a few hours after work reading every topic. But since I only shoot for the fun of it, I only have a limited amount of time after work to dedicate to my passion before the wife and kids kick in!

Therefore, saying "Open this software, go to this menu, do this" or "I've seen this on a thread that looks like this" takes as much time as saying "If you do a little quick search on the forum, you will see that the question has been answered before"

Whenever I see a topic relating to my field of expertise (on related forums), I just share what I know, just out of respect for those who helped me doing the exact same thing.

Does any of this makes sense?

I was just trying to be helpful. You would probably find the answers you're looking for way faster by just searching. If you noticed, I answered your question above.

you can just rotate your clip 180 degrees and paste the attributes on all your clips.

also, search around www.redrockmicro.com/forum . There is tons of good info there.
Also check out http://cinevate.com/phpBB2/ for more info on this stuff.
