hey guys, i dl a trial of this vegas program...it seems pretty cool so far...its my first time trying a video editing program. I have a question. How do you add an effect to a certain part of a video clip? When i choose an effect, it adds it to the whole clip. For example, i want to add a flash of light to a cetain section of a video clip, right when a beat hits in the audio. How do u go around doing this? Is it like Maromedia flash where u use keyframes? I think i read that in the help somewhere. If so, how do u use it and where is it? :) I've gotten the timing down ok and all that. Its just the small things i wanna figure out now...

There are many ways that you can do this. First, you can use key frames like you were saying. Simply apply a levels adjustment to the clip and blow out the highlights. Add the keyframes so that it does it where you want it to. The second and, much easier way to do it is to cut the clip on the beat "s" on the keyboard. After splitting the clip, add a "flash" transition, and adjust to taste.
Have fun and keep playing, it is the best way to learn.

i'll try both ways. Experiment and all that jazz...i know how to do transitions..i never knew about splitting the clip though like that. Although i just got the dl the program. Thats what i was trying to do though. Press "S"..interesting.......thanks for the reply and the help man...and thanks...i am having fun.... :)

when i press "s" on the keyboard, it takes a part out of the video clip.(frame) So when i play it, it totally skips that part. When i do a transition, and put in an effect, it plays the effect, but it totally skips that part still. How do u make the video clip run smooth if by pressing 's", it takes out a frame? =/

It doesn't take out a frame. Well, it shouldn't be taking out a frame, anyway. All the S does is Split the clip. Just a cut between frames.

Now, if you move the clips...there will be black space between them....stretch out the timeline a bit and make sure you don't have any gaps.

Also, make sure that both the video AND audio tracks are selected before you type "s" on the keyboard, otherwise only the selected clip will be split and you may lose audio/video sync. Maybe this is what happened, and you are thinking that you lost a frame when in fact you just got out of syn a bit...

Like stylnk, I'm new to video editing. I'm coming from an audio production background. Have been working with Vegas for a couple of days now - and I could use some help with the split command. I'm trying to add a lens flare effect for just a split second in an event. So I split it and I get two separate clips that I can work with - all good. BUt when I right click on the portion that I want to flare and go to media events and add the flare effect, it shows up on the entire clip that I just split. If I try to delete the effect from the clip that I don't want it on, it deletes it from both. So somehow these two events are still considered one by Vegas. Am I missing something here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the video events are truly separate, you should see a separate video fx icon at the far right end of each clip (it looks like a cross with the horizontal parts elongated). So unless you see separate icons, the video clips have not been split (is it possible you split the audio, but not the video?). Also, make sure you are not adding the video fx to the entire track (which would be done by clicking the video icon in the track header).

The transition works fine with the original clip. But, if i try and slow down the 2 cut clips, it becomes all jerky and skips at that section.....i want to have it flash at a precise moment....but i want it slow motion. Slowing down the velocity of the clip, wrecks the whole thing. :(

Use keyframes then. It's fast and easy, and you get the exact result exactly where you need it.

Keyframes can be layered, so that you can control several different elements of the effect.

It's also easy to move the keyframe around, so you can experiment with the best placement of the effect.

Finally, you can apply a curve to ease-in to the effect, or slam into it hard.

Did you slow it down and then add the effect, or add the effect and then slow it down?

I think the first way would work better.

what i've done in the past to achieve this effect is to add a new video track above the clip in question and insert two empty events. have the empty events overlap where you want the flash to happen and insert the flash transition there.

i slowed it down then added the effect....

i want to remove the effect now, but it wont let me....when i click the event FX button for that certain video clip, thres no plugins. Shouldnt the effect be there, then all i have to do is uncheck that effect at the top of the chain?

I'm a newbie though, so i could be wrong. Anyone wanna tell me how to remove an effect?

i've got to admit...for never touching a video editing program, Vegas is pretty easy so far....awsome program..!!....

Well...hmmm...if the effect is not on the event, you probably put it on the entire track. Whoops.

Or you have enough events in the chain for the one you're looking for to have scrolled off. here are little left/right arrow buttons then you need to use to scroll it back into view.

But since you said the effect is affecting the whole thing...are you sure you did an event effect and not a track effect?

Dan

i applied the effect to the whole track. I think i originally applied it to each clip, but then decided i wanted every clip the same effect...so i applied it as a whole....because well its alot faster. But, it doesnt look like i can backtrack anymore.....i really hope i can get out of it, because i dont really want to have to do each clip again and do all the timing and what not.

Whats a track effect?..applying to just a section of a clip?..or one clip?

Over on the left in the block with the track number, etc., there is that little green cross-bar thingie where you set track effects. Looks sort of like this: -|- (Too lazy to capture an image of it). Anyway, the same little thingie appears on the right side of each separate event in the timeline...so you can set the effect just for that event. On the event/clip, it's just below the Pan/Crop button.

Putting an effect chain on the track will effect the whole track, putting it on an individual event will just do that event. You get the idea.

If it's on the track, you *should* be able to remove it again. I can't think of a reason why not...unless you've rendered it to a new track.

(Sorry if this makes no sense...I just woke up...and don't have Vegas here with me on this machine.)

ohh i see what you mean now. Theres a few of those -|- symbols around. Its hard figuring out the interface for any new program. I didnt even really notice all the symbols on the left blocks haha. Thanks for the help man, i've figured everything out now.
