newbie buying guide

hi everyone (first post)
I'm looking to buy a camera that will be used for making video to publish online. I need something with a manual lens, 3ccd (for excellent filming) and a price that won't break my budget.
I've been looking at the SONY VX2100/ Panasonic DVC30 (with the Sony as my first choice). Recently I've been eying the SONY HD camcorder or Panasonic DVX100A or CANON XL2.
Please offer me your best advice. At the most I want the output (again for the web) to be around 640x480 but cannot compromise on video and audio quality.
Thanks.

well, my budget is fixed towards the above cameras. I mean my upper limit would be to the price of the canon xl2. The way I see it is, as long as I can use it for 2-3 years without having to buy another I'm ok.
As for the output medium, well i have no idea what that means. I do intend to publish the movies on Quicktime in three different sizes and frame rates depending on the connection speed of my viewer.

Also, what are you shooting? Events/weddings? Then Sony. Movie set production type stuff? Anything else. What you plan to shoot is very important as the camera needs to match the demands of your shooting.

To clarify, I'd only recommend the Sony VX2100 for wedding/event shooting as it has a full auto mode that's idiot proof and the best low light ability needed for receptions. But for anything else, I'd recommend any other of the cameras you mention. They all do better at "production" type shooting as you'll have vastly more control over your images in the ways that type of shooting demands. Hope that makes sense.

We'll be shooting everything from product reviews, like those on cnet.com, and auto reviews. So essentially I'd need a camera that can do it all. My question is do I need it to be HD-ready, or is there not much difference between the VX2100 and HDR-FX1.
Also I am sceptical about Canon as I do not know anything about their durability vs. the everlasting Sonys and Panasonics.

hey BenB,
So if I plan to do fast-moving car shots are both Sony's out of the question? Should I only look at the Canon and Panasonic?
