Newbie 35mm adapter question

Has anyone tried modifying a cheap SLR camera into a 35mm adapter? It seems like the only two things really needed would be to replace the focusing screen with something brighter / matte and to modify the viewfinder so that the attached video camera would be able to see the whole viewing area.

I thought about attempting this, has enyone else? Thanks.

Thanks, this is great.

Is there a way to actually use the viewfinder instead of removing it and focusing on the screen? That way the camera wouldn't be at a 90 degree angle.

Why isn't anybody else doing it? It flips the image and everything... seems like more people would opt for this.

Righto- but if I could shoot straight into the viewfinder instead down into the focusing screen that would be the way to go. If this is the case, I could lop off the sides of the SLR camera and refabricate a "sexy" shell for it. What d'ya think? Is it possible?

I think the prism is too small, as its designed for the human eye rather then a camcorder lens. There result is the image is cropped off.

Maybe, but it would be difficult. By trying to view the image through the viewfinder you are zooming in on a very small area. Removing the viewfinder so you can focus on the focusing screen gives you a much larger area to record. I suppose you could create a new shell that would allow that, but keep in mind you're probably looking at more light loss due to the mirror or prism system that flips the image.
