NEWBEE question about color in fcp vs color

What are the relative advantages and disadvantages of color grading in FCP or sending it to Color to Grade? Is there anything I can't do in FCP that I can do in Color? (It also seems some people use Colorista in AE or just straight AE for grading--what are the advantages / disadvantages of that?)

Sure lots- but to really appreciate what's different you need to actually sit down and learn a lot about color correction and Color. If you are getting satisfactory results in FCP alone then you shouldn't worry.

I know something about color correction, and have played around in color. But I want specifics as to what color offers me that FCP doesn't.... Thanks.

What Color offers over FCP is a more refined, more efficient, and more accurate way to manipulate the image. Color has better scopes, curves, and higher precision rendering than FCP does. Color allows you to quickly toggle your grade on/off as well as cycle thru up to four different grades on each clip. Color allows you to use hardware control panels instead of mousing around the interface (think of the difference between playing a real piano w/your hands and playing a virtual piano w/a mouse). Color allows you to save your entire grade as well as the settings for individual rooms (Primary In, 8 secondaries, Color FX, etc.,). When I've tried to mimic what I consider a relatively simple grade I've done in Color in FCP it required multiple instances of a number of filters (3-way CC, masks, RGB Balance, etc.,) as well as multiple instances of the source clip itself.

This is just the tip of the iceberg though. Color is a very thorough app designed to do one thing, color grading, very well where as FCP is an editing app w/some color grading filters.
