newb question about playback

Ok, so I know that you shouldn't playback tapes on the dvx to save your heads...but how do you guys check if you got the shot?
When I was shooting before with my consumer cam I would always playback what I shot immediately to see if I got the shot or had to redo it. (I was making a snowboard video)
Do you guys just shoot all day and then pop the tape into a cheap cam to check/capture it?
I realize that it is subjective but what do the pros do? Especially when clients want to see straight away... ???

Re: newb question about playback

i dont think theres anything wrong with playback on the dvx. Just dont capture with it. but if you really want to save the heads get another camera that youll use for playback and also capture.

Re: newb question about playback

Playback is as bad as capturing! What is bad is to rewind then play then rewind. I do snowboard video too and when I want to see if a shot is good, i wait to be at home to capture it with my deck. there is another way to check if you shot is correct instantly is to use DVRack or a CRT monitor to be sure focus and color are Okay. But I agree, for snowboard it's not a good idea to ride to montain with a CRT but if you're shooting street rail, you can find a power source and power your CRT or you laptop for DVRack!

Re: newb question about playback

You don't need to be terrified to use the camera. A capture deck or another cam is a good idea but don't be afraid to use it on site. Checking your shots will not kill the camera - It's a well built unit and you can use it.

It's one thing to care for it and treat it well. It's another to "avoid" using it. Keep it in the box and your heads will last 30 years ;)

Re: newb question about playback

Thanks Dakota, that's a good way to put it.
@ Ronik: what level of snowboard videos do you do? pro or am?
what do you use to carry the dvx?

Re: newb question about playback

Follow up question:
I know that using the camera as a playback machine adds hours to the heads and it is probably better in the long run to use a less expensive machine just for that purpose. My question is this: I once heard that a different machine (other than the camera) should be used to playback because the DVX100 is a CAMERA, and because it is not designed as a playback machine, the QUALITY suffers in playback. I always thought that as long as I didn't see artifacts and/or dropouts when I loaded it into Final Cut Pro from my camera, that I was ok...that resolution or compression wasn't worse because I used the camera. Am I wrong? Thanks.

Re: newb question about playback

I too have a question about playback and quality.
After I record on my DVX100a, is it ok to play the tape back on my cannon Optura Pi?
Will there be a degradation in quality as I use the Optura to play back the tape and transfer the footage to my computer?
I am guessing that it is ok to playback using another camera because the signal has already been encoded to digital. I need confirmation that the signal/image will not degrade in quality.
Thanks in advance.

Re: newb question about playback

Once the footage is on tape the play back camera won't change it. It's digital. 1s and 0s. Think of it as a word document made on your computer and put on a CD - Open that CD on another computer and the document is unchanged.

So yes, using a cheap miniDV cam is fine. Many, many folks do so.

Grab a cheap or used camera and you can keep it on your desktop plugged into puter full-time. You should be less worried about the heads and more concerned about plugging the firewire in and out. That can be bad for the firewire port on the DVX

Dakota
Are you speaking electronically, mechanically or both??

Re: newb question about playback

Some people have had firewire port failure from plugging it in and out. It is vulnerable and unfortunately not mentioned in the manual. At the vary least make sure camera and computer are off when hooking up.

What is interesting in all of the times over the years I have seen the subject come up on many different cameras, on many different forums, no one ever talks about why the 1394 ports stop working. They just stop working. And nobody says why. If going 6 pin to 6 pin, there isn't much opportunity for disaster, but on 6 to 4 like on a camcorder, the distater is waiting to happen. [/quote]

Re: newb question about playback

For the moment it's kinda amateur video because of the level of the riders but some are on company's team and they all ride for a shop... but I don't know when they'll turn pro!
