Hi guys,
So I'm another kid who's wanting to become a film maker. A couple weeks ago I didn’t know anything about the subject -but I've been reading this board, as well as other online information, and gaining a lot of knowledge.
I recently purchased a Canon XL1 on eBay and the camcorder has been working great.
I know how important sound is, and as I begin shooting a short film, I'm a little confused about the whole sound set up.
Here's what the seller of the XL1 included with the camcorder:

One end: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/vmg2003/sound2.jpg
the other end: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/vmg2003/sound4.jpg
Now I'm confused about the piece shown in the last two pictures. (picture of each end)
I also purchased an Audio-Technica "AT835B" mic and was wondering if I need the XLR adapter to connect it to my XL1.
OR, if I can simply use that little piece (which I have no idea what it is) --Also, the film is for the internet, so it doesn’t matter if sound quality is a bit less with out the XLR adapter --as long as it's better than the buit-in mic on the XL1. Now of course, I don't mind buying the $200 XLR adapter, but if I can avoid it, it'll be great.
Sorry for such newbie post...
