Newb Capturing Question

HI, I've searched around the forums for this answer but as far as ive seen nogo.

My brains kinda fried from messin with this thing and I know its probly something completely simple that im messing up, but I just cant see it.

OK so when I capture I open up my log an capture window. I fast forward my tape on my little canon ZR800 so Im not editing on my DVX100 heads. Find the point I wanna mark in....then fast forward to a point where I wanna mark out. then when Im in the capture section and I hit clip it rewinds my tape way farther back then the little 2 minute part of the tape i want to capture.

It then starts capturing like 10 minutes before my mark in point. I tried finding the answer on here but couldnt.....any help would be appreciated thank you.

If you have any timecode breaks weird things will happen. Don't know if you do or not, but that might be what the problem is.
I'm using a consumer camera for capturing. Most of the time I just get real close to the first in point of the first clip I want to capture to avoid any problems. I batch capture a lot. Log clips, then batch capture. During the batch capture I go get a cold beverage or go for a walk or something.

cool thanks, i don't think i have any timecode breaks but then again the actual definition of a timecode break escapes me at the moment, im actually just trying to get this 2 minute part off of this 40 minute tape ...im really new to this so im sure im doin somthing wrong. my brains fried lol..i think i should take a break instead if tryin to figure it out. thanks though Alasken any help is always appreciated.

yah weirdest thing.. I can play my footage then capture by pressing now and then when i want to stop just press escape and that works fine that way.....but with batch or clip it rewinds to some random point on my tape and then starts to capture....sooooooooo weird.

That has happened to me too and I don't know why. I've been using the same camera to capture for a few years and it has always been a problem from time to time. So I always pause the camera within a few seconds of where I want to start the capture and don't have any issues.

awesome ! LOL awesome in the sense that im not the only one and I dont feel like a complete newb.. not awesome that we cant get our program to do what we want it to do. I'll call apple today Alasken and post what they tell me...thanks for replying !

Ok so im about to make myself look really amateur, but thats what i am and im just starting out so i dont care lol. Also what Im about to say may help another newb like myself.

Just got off the phone with one of the apple reps for final cut...........I kinda feel like i should have gone to school for all this now lol...anyways he was super helpful and kinda gave me a quick film school lesson. I explained to him my problem, told him I was "new" He new right away what the problem was and also what you were saying Alasken about timecode breaks was 100% right.

I didnt know that I should record "black" for the length of the tape before i shoot.....neeeeewb lol. My god Im just so happy I figured out what I was doing I dont care if it makes me look mentally delayed . Anyways just in case any new guy or gal comes across this, recording black is sticking the tape in a camera, put the lens cap on, turn the sound off, or put it someplace quiet if u cant turn the sound off and press record, leave it somewhere recording for the length of the tape...that way you dont have a break in the time...Im still wrapping my head around all of this so hope that helps.....considering I didn't know what recording black meant before all this Im happy.... actually the meaning of timecode breaks were kinda a mystery aswell. anywho off to shoot more, but not before recording black first !

ok so the apple guy was wrong..this is what some ppl told me on the apple support pages.

Actually, your apple rep was just passing along dross. All blacking tapes does is put hours on the heads, wear and tear on the tapes and waste your time.

Your time code breaks are most likely the result of operator error or a malfunctioning system.

Blacking tape does not solve your problem because DV camcorders simply overwrite time code. If you start/stop a tape wrong, you can still end up with a TC break AND a much much harder time finding it as the TC won't reset to zero.

Better to learn how to shoot video.

• Always run tape for several seconds after each scene.
• Do not rewind/review clips. If you do, STOP the play back several seconds before the end of the previous clip. This will allow the next scene to pick up the TC from the last clip and go forward without interruption.

and also

If you have a DVX100, you need to learn the difference between timecode preset and timecode regeneration, as well as learn how to keep consistent timecode throughout the tape.

As was also stated earlier, that Apple support dude is completely wrong about blacking tape. Put bars up for 30 seconds, then I put up 10 seconds of black. That's all you need for timecode regen.

interesting

Another thing that could be going on, try checking your pre-roll (handles) in your capture settings. Just a slim possibility. On another note, On your camera (most prosumer cameras)(DVX,HVX) there is a end search button that is used to rewind or fast forward your tape to the last frame of footage after a preview or inserting an old tape. This will continue your timecode where you left off.
