NEWB ALERT NEWB QUESTION Source video 854x480 from Sony HD Camcorder

Hello,

My client has supplied me with video files recorded on a Sony Camcorder that is HD. The files are 854x480 - I don't really recognized this size as HD in anyway, and google searches and forum searches seem very ambiguous - most of the results are tutorials for Handbrake and DVD Ripping software.

My question is what is my best output compression scheme and what do I need to know about this file type? if it's 480 vertical pixels, isn't this just 480p?

That resolution usually happens when 720x480 anamorphic (1.2 pixel ratio) is transcoded to 0.9, or 1.0 pixel ratio for wide screen. If you need to edit this footage, get the original from your source. The only reason to transcode 1.2 into 1.0 is to publish to the web. If the final destination is for DVD then the footage should be kept in 720x480, 1.2pr and flagged in the authoring program as widescreen.
