NEW Website Portal (preview)

Ok, I just whipped this design together as a starting point. Please let me know what you think. What would you add? Weather? Stocks? The latest HVX news?

It's a portal. Yes, another one. But the catch will be, instead of making Google, MSN, or Yahoo billions of dollars richer, Isara's income will go towards charity and humanitarian projects. Imagine being able to help others (instead of helping a multi-billion dollar corporation) just by setting your homepage to another website. And you'll still get the same search, news, etc. Would you make the switch? If not, why?

Thanks.
pk

P.S. The icons (home, e-mail, etc.) are just place holders. Unless you all like them.

It looks too cookie cutter. YES, it's another portal, but NO, it doesn't have to look like all the others. Just a thought. I mean, I'll set it to my homepage, but that's because I know you...

Would someone who didn't know you do the same...?

(So, what I'm trying to say is, naked pictures. That's what'll get em.)

Looks good..you made that?..could be a little big more ''unorganized'' if you get wat im saying..looks like everything is jus made from the center going outward.

You pretty much tackled all the basic parts of different news in those categories...then you have sub categories...maybe display like a marquee ticker showing stock quotes of members' stocks they wanna see scrolling. Like members type in what up to the minute stocks they wanna see...then it scrolls at the top or suttin when they log in.

"too cookie cutter"? Yikes! Right to the heart. :) Definitely don't want to be cookie cutter, but also don't want to do anything too strange or the average joe surfer won't be comfortable. But that's what I need to hear. Thanks TC. By the way, I finally was able to download some zombie flicks (had a computer virus for a week or more and sporadic internet connections). Your flick was cool. The axe to the head was incredible! The ending left me hanging, but that's the only complaint. The rest was great! good job.

The big portals also have a ton of content, with regular updates. You can link to the same news and have XML updates, but I think USA Today has made it clear that people like to start with big, colorful pictures.

It's a noble idea though, PK.

It looks very pretty, but if I came across it online I'd mistake it for one of those placehoder pages for domain squatters. Ya know the ones?

Whatever changes you make, keep it nice and clean like it is. I have used Google for years for mainly that reason. I have a couple of suggestions for content when I get done in the bathroom. I really do like it as is, though.

Thanks for all the .02 cents. :) I really respect all of your opinions so any suggestions you make will be taken seriously.

Here's the latest. Added some more eye candy. Sorry Daniel, I just now read your post. Is this too much?

Adding the latest projects items makes it seem more ligitimate to me... I guess I like to feel as if there's more than just a random computer behind things that's sorting data -- even though I do use Google News on a daily basis. :)

Naw, that aint too much P.K.

Here's some of what I would do:

First off, nobody but us and your parents (and some others) know what you and Isara are, and your portal automatically assumes that its users know what it is. I would come up with some kinna slogan to put under the Isara icon. Something like "The Do Good Portal" or whatever...something that immediately identifies it as a portal for those who like to make the world better.

I would also, on the main portal page, put a link to http://www.thehungersite.com/ and a brief explanation that you can go there and to the related sites, giving each one a daily click giving food to the hungy, saving tracts of rainforest, providing child healthcare, promoting literacy, and providing mamograms.

Devote it to making doing real good, as convienient as possible, and make it obvious that it's there for that purpose.

Owen - Thanks. I'll probably have links to other projects and other organizations in rotation so they change daily.

Daniel - Those are really great ideas. I already had a slogan, but was afraid to put it in just yet. What do you think about "Helping you, help the world." Because the site helps you (like any other portal) but your helping the world be better just by using it. Is it too Jerry Maguire. "Help me, help you!" Also I was going to have a definition of Isara somewhere. It means "freedom". hmmmm Make it obvious that the site has a "special purpose" (like Steve Martin in "The Jerk"). That's a good point. If the site is a good resource with useful info (same as other portals) then hopefully people will switch to the underdog. Imagine the stories, "Google losing market share to a small non-profit organization." :) ha! Start selling your google stock.

Delusions of grandeur are great.

I second the slogan idea. Even now if someone asked me what Isara was I'd have to just mumble something out a monk taking kids to movies while wearing helmets. (kidding!)

A slogan would be dandy!

Can ISARA also be an acronym?

Inernational Safety Awareness and Regional Aid

Incredible Stunts At Ridiculous Altitudes

etc?

Fine, if you don't want anybody visiting the site, be my guest.

"And here we have PK standing on a bucket juggling monkeys."
"And here we have PK in low earth orbit... orbiting earth!"

Heck, they both sound interesting.

Juggling cats, can do. Monkeys? Maybe if they have tails. :)

Any more opinions? Come on, here's your chance to get in on the ground level. (More like basement level.)

There's a joke there, but I don't want to get banned...:lipsrseal
