New User - Recommendations needed

Hey, I just got a DVX and I was wanting to see if I could just get one directed shotgun blast of advice to go with the shoddy research I do before I go out and buy more stuff for it.

I need a tripod and a case first thing, and recommendations on where and which ones to get would be appreciated ASAP. Next, editing software, and, if I don't make another thread about it here, my choices (since I'm a student) are basically the $300 Avid package or a $700 Adobe Pro package... the Adobe has more software, but from what I've heard all that stuff is in Avid, too? I want to be able to do special effects like green screen, which one is better for that?

And, I guess beyond that, recommendations for stuff to get that I'm not even thinking about. What's the essential gear for someone who only has the stock accessories?

Thank you for your responses if you give them!

My recommendation is you go with Vegas for your editing... especially if you're shooting 24p.

You might wanna check out this tripod because it's cheap but actually functions very well:

I like pelican cases for my gear:

That's all the crap I'd buy right now if you're just getting started. Just focus on learning your new cam inside, out, in between, around, and through and through. Develop your relationship with your new best friend and soulmate and don't let any other accessories get between you and your DVX. There is a plethora of info on this website that you'll find useful. As the mantra goes: The Search function is your friend.

Are you implying that I should do more research instead of posting a catch-all thread for my questions? If I had that much energy I'd be in shape!

I second the Vegas 6 suggestion, 24p workflow is seamless.

As far as essential accessories;

1) 72mm UV filter to protect the lens.

2) Hard case. I got a Pelican. It rocks, but it's cumbersome. My DVX came with a free softcase, so if I need a shoulder bag, I use that.

3) Tripod. I went with a Manfrotto 501 with 3182 legs. Solid setup IMHO.

4) Tapes (of course). Consensus is go with Panasonic MQ tapes and stick with them.

5) DVXuser battery. They're really good.

As far as other "essentials" that you will need to address;

-Sound- Don't skimp on this-$300 minimum for a shotgun, shockmount, and windscreen (Rode NTG1 or 2 kit, or AT897 kit).--And that's just for exterior shots.
You'll need a condenser for interiors.

Don't fret this though, I rent my mics locally, and it only costs me $20 a day for an AT897 kit (but I'm friends with the proprietor).

-Lighting- I don't know what kind of stuff you plan on shooting, but you may want to do some research in this area.

In school I used all kinds of lights, but my personal kit leaves much to be desired. Since I shoot mostly exteriors, bounce cards are all I use. Of course, I also have my 2-500W halogen shoplights(on a stand), and a few clamp lamps with 250W tungsten bulbs (like I said, A LOT to be desired).

Personally, I love the integration of all the Adobe programs, but I've never used Vegas, so....

Depending on how big your tripod budget is, I just ordered the bogen 503 head on Manfrotto 755 legs. 2 of my friends have the same setup and it rocks. the leveling sphere is really helpful. the 756 legs are basically the same but 3 inches shorter, and cheaper.

order from EVS (www.evsonline.com) , they're good people

And yes, UV is a must, as well as sticking with MQ tapes.

VEGAS Its just freaking GREAT. I learned on Vegas, and now when i use other editing platforms, when it comes to 24p, its just not the same. Noone does 24p Better. - Go to JourneyED.com you can get it on discount there for students. And thats the Vegas + DVD ( it in cludes DVD architect, a solid DVD authoring program)

I really like my AudioTechnicha AT897, i second that mic. Cheap, and good sound, and its not too Directional, which seems like a good idea at the time, but its not always the practical choice. BUT i reccomend a decent Wireless, LAvier mic setup. far more useful.

503 is a good choice, buy my 501 hasnt failed me yet.
Legs depend on the application.

BUY LIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Atleast 3. a 500 watt Softbox is a must. 2 Fresnel Lights, 150W and a 300/600W regardless of manufacturer. Arri is the standard. I LOVE MY ARRIS. Go to Rostronics.com to get cheap softbox kits. you can get a 2 or 3 light kit for the price of one at a normal store. They make a great product, dont be afraid of the price. they just cut out the middle man and have no Gross markup.
Also get color correction Gels so you can use your lights in daylight , they are invaluable.

If you do handheld work, get a Spiderbrace. (google spiderbrace) they are great and Cheap.

GAFFERS TAPE! Lots of Gaffers tape!

This is all i can think of in terms of Basics. From here you can do just about anythign with some ingenuity.

OH yea forgot, Go to Homedepot get Silvery sided Tyvek Board. it looks like styrofoam, with a metal foil side. Use it as a reflector. ( SUPER USEFUL )

Best
