Hi all, I am a newbie from Italy even though I used to do some amatour video editing work many years ago (w/premiere pro). I have a big number of mini DV tapes taken with a consumer canon camcorder that I should at least put in an electronic archive in file format.
I have recently updated my system buying this notebook (http://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Aspire-Ethos-5951G-268G75BNkk.59473.0.html) that sports a firewire port and reasonably good processing power. I also have a full adobe creative suite with all programs I would need (premiere CS5.5 after effects, etc etc).
Then following some indications I found here and there I added a 2 TB 7200 rpm seagate external drive in an esata enclosure to use as scratch disk for premiere projects.
Following your forum I also bought a Sony HX9V as a substitute of my former mini DV camvorder and I am very happy with it. Thanks you all!!!
Finally, I have an HD ready (720p) plasma TV from Panasonic.
Now I would need some more help from you to get started. I have a fair number of questions (sorry for long first post and newbie questions) that I hope someone will like to answer to help me, thanks in advance:
1) EDIT AND ARCHIVE LEGACY TAPES
I need to capture mini DV tapes, to edit them and then save them in a format that optimises space and quality of the video.
a) Some of the tapes are in 4:3 and I would like to transform them in 16:9. How can I do it in premiere CS5.5? (I looked around the various menus but I found no easy way)
b) I find that tape video captured shows signs of what seems to me as bad interlacing (small horisontal lines cut the margins of the objects shown in video) and I would like to understand if I an doing something wrong in the capture process (options for the video I used are the usual DV Pal) or if I have to correct it somehow after capture (pls advise how)?
c) Once I edit the content and I like to export a master file which format I ought to use to reasonably maximise quality and keep files at a manageable size? Do you archive in DVDs or in HDs?
d) Would it be possible/convenient to upgrade the original SD material in HD or is it better to leave it as it is?
2) EDIT AND ARCHIVE AVCHD FILES FROM THE SONY HX9V
e) Normally I use the best 28M 1080p 50p video format available with the Sony. Should I edit directly in that format or would it be better to create timelines in 25p to gain a free slowmo option if I like to use it in editing? How can I do it?
f) which kind of options you suggest me to use in terms of workflow and scratch disks, project disk and so forth?
g) once the editing is done, which kind of master format you suggest me to use in order to archive the files? Needless to say again that should be a good compromise between size and quality?
Thank you very much in advance for your attention and help
