New TSA rules & carry on cameras/gear...

Hi All;

Not sure if this is the right forum... but need some advice or recommendations based on recent experience.

Planning on traveling on vacation to the Cook Islands next year and would like to take some of my gear. Namely, DVX200 and maybe my 5D3 and a few lenses & tripod. The lenses and cameras would be carry on, tripod checked. Seems like the TSA is "screening cameras" now (since about August, and now rolled out to pretty much every airport) and the last thing I want is one of these idiots dropping a lens or shoving a swab up the sensor of one of my cameras. I have appropriate carry on bags for this stuff, so packing & size isn't an issue. But how much of a hassle is this new screening? I haven't flown with gear since it started. Should I rethink even taking anything? Need a reality check on how stuff's going down at airports for those that travel (since this enhanced screening came into play).

Thanks!

I just traveled with a camera and batteries as carry on. They were mainly concerned about my AB batteries. But they were 90wH, so they were cleared (after some discussion). Make sure your batteries are not above 100wH or that may be an issues. As far as camera, I had a Panasonic HPX370 with P2 cards. They did make me put the camera through the xray (or whatever that screening machine is). And at one of the airports, they did "swab" the camera after it had gone through xray. (they just swabbed the outside). No problems for me on this trip. Good luck!

From the Federal Aviation Administration website...

"With airline approval, passengers may also carry up to two spare larger lithium ion batteries (101-160 watt hours). This size covers the larger after-market extended-life laptop computer batteries and some larger batteries used in professional audio/visual equipment." https://www.faa.gov/about/initiatives/hazmat_safety/more_info/?hazmat=7

I have two V-Mounts for my camera and LED panels, one is a 158wH and one is a 177wH. I have flown with the 158wH several times with no issue.
