Hello

Just found this forum seems a great place with many good people to offer some advice

I have the Sony FX1 and want to get the 8 foot Kessler crane but will later upgrade it to the 12 foot so it will need to support the 12ft crane can anyone tell me what tripod i will need to use with this camera and crane

People have talked of so many heads and tripods I have no idea which one to choose

Will i need a 75mm half bowl or 100mm

I saw one tripod that could handle a maximum weight of 20KG would this be any good for the crane fx1 and all the counter weights

Thank you for your help and time

Weight is definitely an issue with the 12ft Kessler, camera, and counterweights. I went as far as making a DIY tilt/swivel in place of the regular pan/tilt head. The cheapest Bogen head that would handle the weight is around $1500.00. One of these days, I'll post my DIY "head" in the DIY section.

What system holds 20kg? It must be expensive.

Hello

Thank you for the reply

There are the 350MVB, 350SHMVB, and the 351MVB they all have a max load of 20KG

And you could add the 316, 526 head which are both rated at 16KG

That’s about the best i could find but i still have no idea how well this would work for the 12ft with a 2KG camera plus the weights

Just curious, but since you bought the Kessler and are intending to upgrade to the 12' extension, why didn't you go with their Mark 3 Crane Support Tripod? At $599 it looks like good value and is specifically built for their cranes.

Hello

Because i am in the UK and shipping something like that plus import fees would be very costly

Thanks

I have the 12' Kessler Crane and use the Bogen/Manfrotto 528XB. It works just fine and will support up to 66lbs.
The sticks weigh almost 17lbs themselves and are built very sturdy.

Yes, by far , this tripod is the one I'd recommend for the money. It's only rated for 66lbs but I've had my 300lb jibs on them. A lot of the European crane companies also use them for their big cranes.

I have the 12 ft Kessler. Was gonna buy the 528xb sticks. It's a little early and can't remember what I use. It's the mid grade Manfrotto sticks. 3 somethings.

Anyway, I called Eric directly and he gave me a complete breakdown of weight capacities. Also, you may end up just going with the 528 because they're coming out with a 16 ft extension also. Call Eric Kessler, he's cool.

Thanks for the help guys

WOW they are coming out with the 16ft is that going to be $200 like the 12ft upgrade

yes i might go with the 528xb as it sounds like it will be good enough to take the16ft if i choose to upgrade

What head do you think i should get as there are so many to choose from

I have not seen anyone ask about the FX1 and this crane each camera has its own weight and the fx1 is 2KG alone

so i was not sure what tripod i needed

Thanks
