Okay, so maybe not that new, but this camera begins a new standard of gimmikery or usefulness, dependant on Your needs.

If these projectors become as ubiquitous as the digital camera has
in Our mobile phones – and You know it will – then no public blank
space (in range) will be safe!
I look forward to the time when they will be powerful enough to
reach the blank screen facing Us in the theatre before the
Film starts (seeing as the cinemas near Me at least, can’t be bothered
with tabs/curtains any more!) Would be nice to have an inpromptu film fest with Our 'phones while We wait for the main feature.

Oh, and the reverse engineers have been busy with it too.

I do agree, having a projector built in will cause alot more problems than not... people projecting on stuff that need not be projected onto, (think kids play, and a porno being projected on the curtain)

But then again, having a personal projector means you can show anything anywhere

I think it's a great idea... how many times do you see people crowded around the LCD wanting to see the pictures you just took? That thing will be the ultimate social camera.

Saw it at local trade show last week. Really impressive results considering the price, size and power draw.

I agree Jim, that 3M unit does look impressive, and My guess would be that the primary initial market for units of this type would be for business reps on the road that need a small device that can act as a decent display for their pda/phone/laptop source.

The main hurdles for this kind of tech are the light source and battery life, both of which are still advancing rapidly, making it hard to predict how it will mature.
The automotive industry is working hard on battery technology, which may be transferable to a small physical size, and as for the lamp? well, I remember (full-size) laser video projection being demonstrated as a woking prototype about ten years ago here in Europe, so that leaves only one variable to pin down - the price! :happy:
