Hi Everyone
I have been using Vegas for about a year but just for very amateurish
family home videos. I have a Canon camcorder MV700i, which cost $700 at the time, but is not worth much nowadays.
I have recently been taking surfing footage as I live near one of the best surf breaks in the world. A lot of my friends surf and are anxious to see their skills played back on the small screen.
I have tried looking for some good beginning tutorials as I really have no idea of the full capabilities of Vegas.I just point and shoot film, upload to Vegas,
then add some crossfades, video, stillshots, audio and some humorous captions here and there.
I have no idea about project settings, render settings etc. As I live in Australia our TV system is PAL, and a lot of info on the net is regarding NTSC, which of course I have no real idea what that means.
My surf movie looks great in the preview window in Vegas, but when it is rendered ( I used mpeg2 and AC3 for use in DVD Architect- and I use this because I read it somewhere on the net), but the finished quality on the disc, which I view on my home DVD player is disgraceful.
The portion of film that is most affected is anything in slow motion. I usually drop a section of film of the surfer on a wave, I copy and paste it on the time line, so that I have 2 identical pieces of footage, I leave one as normal speed, but then slow the other one right down so that they can see themselves surfing in slow motion. It is this piece of footage that is really bad. Also the still shots that I capture from the video footage is very very bad as well.
In the slow motion clip I get horizontal bars on the edge of the surfers body, a blurry view, a grainy view, and maybe some pixelation, I am not sure about the last one as the quality is so bad I can't tell.
I have read so many things and changed so many settings that I have confused myself.
Can someone give me some standard settings to try and any explanation would be welcome. Could it be my camera, although playback through TV directly from camera is quite good, it is only after it has been through Vegas that is degrades. Should I always expect some degradation in the film quality regardless of whether I eventually getting the settings right. I don't think my camera has too many settings I can play with, although I read on the net that action shots need a higher shutter speed, so I changed that in my camera to 1/500 ( again, don't really know what that means)
I would like to continue with the surfing videos, can anyone recommend a half decent camera to purchase in the future and what to look for?
I would really appreciate any help with this, I seem to be just chasing my tail when looking on the net. Most of the info assumes that the reader is already quite savvy in regards to Vegas, cameras, settings etc, and clearly I am not.
Thanks again
Deb
