Not sure if this has already been discussed but it looks like there is another option to consider alongside the Fostex FR-2 and Sound Devices 722/744T: Tascam HD-P2. Press release can be found here while a product info page can be viewed here.

Looks cool. I talked with Tascam about it last week. They don't have a firm delivery date yet. I think it's going to be somewhere around $1200, but Tascam couldn't confirm pricing for me. That's just what I've heard.

Not HD, Not P2! They should consider renaming it because it's the most confusing product ID number I have ever seen in my life!

I thought the same thing... but I gotta' tell ya'... this thing looks to be one seriously kick-ass product.

I can't imagine how slick field recording is gonna' be within the next 3 years.

It already seems like these companies have been listening to what everybody wants... there's a great choice at every price point now... and I've actually heard rumors that this thing may be under $1K street.

The obvious thing you see on the brag sheets that hasn't been mentioned in a post here is TIME CODE. What a luxury at this price range.

EDIT: where do you think they got the inspiration for the form-factor of this thing? (hint: I think I know already... look at the levels knob.)

Here's the catch with it as far as timecode goes. It only takes a timestamp in. There is no generator, so you can't get TC out, so you will need some sort of external timecode generator always attached to it.

you'll have actually to supply tc for stamping , not practical with small cameras ( except canon)
you'll need ext tc generator which have tc free run function at least .
don't understand these companies , such a stupid design , if you have such a huge box , why not to put 2 cf slots
and if you have tc , why not to do it full functional in the future with additional price .
now , if you really don't need tc the 671 is cheaper and if you do need full tc capability , the fostex is the right choice .
like some people say this is not meat and this is not milk - thats parve

Good idea on the double CF slot... yeah, why not?

Once processor power is cheap enough these things are gonna' rock... the 671 already allows you to check and review any portion of the recording you've already done ALL DAY leading right up to the second you're currently recording... all while never interrupting the current recording. I don't know why but I think it's pretty cool that it can read any portion of the CF card while it's still writing to that same card. It does a bunch of other cool stuff too... that's why I say "3 years".

Hopefully the next product cycle will fill in all the minor holes that this one didn't.

Welcome to the world of non-linear recording.
