NEW sub-$500 tapeless CF capture solution DN-60

update...

it does record HD in HDV 1440x1080, all frame rates, so for my purposes this is precisely what i need at a pricepoint i can easily afford, plus all my DSLR's use CF cards, so i already have 5 or 6 16GB CF cards.

My DN-60 came in earlier today, thus far it works flawlessly with my XH A1 setup, recording 30F footage for NTSC directly to my CF cards. Will post some grabs later. Stock XH A1 is 8 bit 4:2:0 25Mbit, this records 10 bit 4:2:0 so it should theoretically be 30Mbit.

Also picking up a Blackmagic Designs H.264 pro converter to pull 12 bit 4:2:2 36 Mbit directly from the component out to a USB 2.0 connected netbook as soon as they are shipping.

Not bad capability for a fairly long in the tooth HDV camera.

I doubt it. Anything that goes through a Firewire connector is just stock codec, no improvement whatsoever. There's no way this recorded 10 bit because you can't even get 10 bit out via the component connector on the A1.

i have read conflicting points on this matter; do you have any resources that would point to a definitive answer?

also then, what is the component out bitrate... i cant get a straight answer out of anyone through canon.

thank you by the way.

FW for certain doesn't offer any advantage. Think about it this way: the data has to be read by the sensor, then encoded (compressed) and then it gets output via FW. So there's no magic that the external recorder can do since by that point the data is already gone. With a component connection, you can get into the acquisition chain at the point where the data hadn't been quite compressed to HDV yet and so you can choose your own higher quality compression scheme.

thank you; DataVideo's information is sketchy at best, and i havent had the chance to work with my footage (i do not edit much if at all).

im going with a blackmagic pro h.264 soon, is there a way to split the component signal, before the pro h.264 (ie component splitter) without losing signal quality, or should i try using an HDV/Firewire component breakout box, and hook up the external LCD (which we use solely for focusing) to the component out of the HDV/Firewire breakout box?

thanks a ton for your input!
