702T: Portable TIME CODE ENABLED Digital Audio Recorder town channel analog , digital I/O COMPACT FLASH ONLY

Very nice, Sound tools makes the best stuff for portable audio. I have had their 302 and 402 mixer for a year now and love them. This is exciting, Any Idea what the price is going to be?

I've heard 1850 and 2375.

I gotta guess the actual sell price will be a couple hundred lower. My assumption is they are releasing this line to compete with these new sub-$1000 recorders that have come out recently. At $2375, I imagine most people looking for 2 channel TC recorder will go with the HD-P2. IMO, Sound Devices' quality is worth some extra bucks but over twice the price for similar features is not market savy pricing.

Excited to hear them either way

I was looking at these device. Because my cable to the camera is a trouble. But for these price, I will stay with my XLR cable.

Wabbit,

Yeah, I was thinking, okay, they've killed my beloved Tascam with those models, but from a price performance standpoint, I'm still not sure I could justify a replace that would cost almost 3x (with TC). And, when you look at the difference in price between the 702T and the 744T, they are also too close...I would probably just go up to the 744 for the extra $1300 or so...

Poked around the audio forums and from what I can tell, the pricing info is a rough guess. Probably set high instead of low so people will be pleased if it comes out priced less and not pissed if they have to raise it.

I am thinking a good price for the 702 would be around $1200 and the 702t would do very well at $1700 MSRP (sell price being slightly less). If they can't get the price that low they are going to lose to the cheaper recorders.

Perhaps they are concerned that the price of the 702t can't be less then half the price of the 744t.

OTOH, it might just be a cost issue and they can't sell it for less and make any money. In that case I would argue that they should dump the preamps since most will stick a mixer in front of it anyways.

They got smarter guys then me figuring this marketing/price stuff out, hopefully they listen to potential customers as well as Panasonic does.

Cheers

Dave,

First came up on RAMPS, then on Jeff Wexler's site. I think it was Frank at Cascade that first leaked it on RAMPS, but his original post seems to have disappeared...I think he pre-announced it a bit before the embargo ended. ;-)

Well, I was finishing for the night and it looks like they were up late in Wisconsin too. The SD site is now updated to include the new recorders. http://www.sounddevices.com/products/7.htm

Looks like they are using the same casing as for the HDD recorders. Guess there will be a lot of empty space in them. "You hide your weed in there man!" (not endorsing drug use but referrencing an old SNL skit....damn I need to get to sleep).

Night all

Cascade Media. I'm pretty sure the pricing is good to go too.

From what I've heard, the 702 is the 722 minus the hard drive and a bit of hardware that makes the hard drive work. Your not talking about all that much money to be saved in a 40 gig hard drive and a controller. If this was too cheap, no one would ever buy the 722.

The 702t is the same thing plus the timecode. For 2300 you either get a hard drive or time code.

Well, it looks like they did a bit of copy and paste or there is a little nugget at the end of the 702T description:

"Its two recording media (hard drive and Compact Flash) "

Not sure if this is an oops...or they bascially released a 722 with timecode.

Phil

Yeah, their pages are a bit riddled with errors from the cut and paste job from the 722.

The new recorders don't have hard drives and one can't add one at a later time either.

I'm surprised that they didn't release a 722t. That's what I want, but I guess I'll just end up with a 744t once the time is right.

I talked to Matt at SD and he confirmed the products, but not prices, and said they would be on the site in a day or so.

Thanks for posting the link. Looks interesting. I bet those things will get amazing battery life.

i guess it will be less good then marantz ( 2 much leds ).

Table 1: Average power consumed (mW). The number for the ``Seeking'' stage is the average power consumed during a seek over one-third of the maximum seek distance.

1.5 w maximum for recorder which pull about 10-w per hour
thats about 10-15 % maximum in battery life.
if we take smart power management is even less

by the way Dave , you can disconnect hd on 722/744- why no one thought about - maybe because it a bad idea :-)
the 702 t is nice - but why take the hdd out ,at least where doing like sony and add internal flash capability option -they dont learn :-)
