New Sony FS7

"Canon of course need to respond soon, or they will lose out. They need a 4K internal camera to compete around this price point..."

From Phillip Bloom. That sounds exciting, but don't know how far off that is. Canon prices for these features are still pretty steep.

This camera checks a lot of boxes for me. I absolutely love the form factor and options. Mitch posted that it outputs same 4K signal as FS700 so the O7Q would be a great option for raw if xavc isn't for you. This is the first Sony in a long time that makes me reconsider some things and seems to fix everything I didn't like of the fs700.

Well done Sony! but then again I'm not a current sony owner and I imagine they might feel a little peeved about a few things. I could see this being my go to rental camera over the C300 now.

Spot on.
I said before that we might be seeing a lot of used FS700s on the market soon. Not to take away from the FS700, but this camera seems to have it all, and at a really good price.
Right now, the go-to camera for productions seems to be the C300. This could be the camera to dethrone it.

I can't wait till this camera gets into more hands and we can see how it works 'beyond the specs' so to speak.

Has anyone seen a list of the exposure tools included? I know the F5/55 were missing some key ones when it launched.

This might just be the first mid level camera I might buy instead of rent as it offers a lot of flexibility to cover any sort of work that comes my way. That Sony f4 powered zoom lens looks like a great ENG style lens for a large sensor cam.

Ya, for me also seems great, i just say the pros and cons i see. Obviuosly a pl mount could destroy f5.
wrll need to wait to confirm the price.
What i dont like from sony id the xavc cidec, it is a h264 variant, its ok for delivery and compression but not for efit.
Any one knows if prores will be added as an option like in f5 f55 ?

@ 4:18 the dock allows prores. Don't know if it's 4:2:2 10bit but I wouldn't think it wouldn't be.

It has viewfinder and a grip (which Zacuto does´t like) and 12-bit RAW out with a V-mount-adapter as well.
Sony is trying to kill Canon in the film segment right now.

Wish it was the A7s sensor to go along with that new ENG style lens. You'll now need to use the speedbooster with 28-135 to get wide angle.

I love the idea of higher frame rates and a better codec than my current A-cam, the C100. However, for some reason my eye just doesn't love the way Sony does their skin tones. They always seem a bit magenta to me, even when color corrected. Am I off here?

The one thing I love about the C100/C300 is how great the skin tones and color look, right out of the box.

This video is pretty bland. I don't think it would've jumped out at me if I were to watch it not knowing any of the specs.

Thoughts from more experienced professionals?

The thing with S-log is that if you shoot it right you can just about go anywhere with it in post. So its really up to the person behind the grading. My impression is that Sony cameras impose very little in any direction and is neutral.

All the footage of the woman being dressed in the kimono is not very well lit. Instead of embracing the soft light coming in from the outside, they blasted a hard fill light on the opposite side that isn't the same color temperature as the cloudy daylight. The result is a very flat, artificial look with two separate skin tones on either hemisphere of her face. Not very flattering or cinematic.

Just wondering why the Sony FS7 has 180 fps in full HD whereas the FS700 has 240fps.

Did I read that right? How come Sony diminished its fps capacity for super slow motion?

It can do 240 with the raw output module.
Maybe they wanted to keep some edge to the FS700 and F5. Maybe they wanted to give people a reason to get the extender module? Maybe it was a technical issue. We will likely never know.

The FS7 is reportedly about $8K w/out the 28-135 zoom, or about $10K with it. The accessory back is another $2K or a bit and there is a $500 rod base that can also function as a studio riser and a VCT-14 adapter. The accessory back is necessary to connect the Odyssey7Q for FS RAW capture.

Odyssey7Q capture from FS7 includes:
- 4K RAW 1-60p (no 120p burst mode available)
- 2K RAW up to 240p
- 4K24K 4K RAW to 4K ProRes 422 HQ
- 4K2HD 4K RAW to HD ProRes 422 HQ

We will have to see Sony's implementation of HD ProRes 422 HQ & 422 to compare it to Odyssey's.

Anyone who owns an Odyssey7Q with FS700 record option now also owns the record option for the FS7. This record option covers the RAW outputs of both cameras.
