New smallhd oled monitor

I read about it on nofilmschool (http://nofilmschool.com/2012/11/smallhd-reveals-ac7-oled-monitors/), and as I commented there, I'm not convinced OLED is a good technology for this. OLED was created as a cheap way to manufacture short-lived screens. The OLED screen in my phone has changed color dramatically since I bought it 18 months ago. My father bought the same phone at the same time, his screen has changed too... in a different way (mine has gone blue, his has gone yellow).

Thank's for the info!

I'm still waiting on some more info on the DP7. OLED sounds neat, too, but looking for something to replace the super popular TVLogic 5.6" that EVERYONE uses here and it doesn't need to be OLED. I'm not a fan of the color on the TVLogic, heck a lot of things honestly and if the DP7 has HDMI > HD-SDI passthrough, fixes a lot of the things that the TVLogic falls short on then I think I'll switch.

There are non-OLED versions of the AC7 and DP7 which are 8-bit IPS. Also, I wonder if OLED is anything like flash memory in that it can be built to wildly varying qualities with significantly different lifespans...

probably
but we won't know how this one fares after 12 months have gone by and we see, or don't see, most of them shifting colors

The AC7 doesn't have audio meters which is unusual as the other similar new monitors have them. I hope they address this soon.

That's a real pity. The idea of OLED technology resonated strongly with me when it was being bandied about on science shows several years ago. Pity about the colours but at least most of the exciting possibilities and potential revolutions they were floating back then (like flexible screens) are still on the table. Doesn't sound particularly useful for this application if the screen isn't lightyears ahead of your phone. It will presumably be better and cost a lot more but it's always best to wait for a technology to mature unless you're buying for pure geek value. A video monitor that works for a year would need to see pretty heavy usage in that 12 months to pay for itself.

[h=3]For your info:

AC7- - SDI[/h]
  • 7.7-inch monitor
  • 1280x800 resolution
  • 8-bit color depth
  • SDI Input (3G/HD/SD)
  • OLED Display Technology

It doesn't have audio meters and doesn't have a battery meter and it never will. Talked to SmallHD yesterday. This monitor is just a replacement for the DP6. If you want to move up in features you will have to look to the DP7.

There's only one 5.6" 1280x800 panel out there, as far as I know. That new Marshall must use it, just like the old DP6 and TVLogic [insert overly long product designation here]. 6-bit is lame. Buy the non-OLED AC7.

Kholi,

Have you seen the new Marshall 5.6" in person? If so I'd love to here your impressions.

A friend is in the market for a small monitor, & I suggested he check it out, but I haven't actually handled one yet.

Best,
Bern

I actually checked the marshall out, but what stopped me from purchasing that is simply word of mouth on the TVLogic, to be honest. EVERYONE snatched those things up here in our city (LA), and I see them on sets all the time. A number of them in fact. My friends rent theirs out constantly.

After having owned the TVLogic, it's not bad, and I think the Marshall might even have better color, but the SmallHD DP7 really looks like a solid move forward while the Marshall looks like a "cross-grade" so to speak.

Hmm... Gear is annoying xD

passthrough

passthrough

I think the DP7's got the HDMI to HD-SDI passthrough though, right? AC7 does as well?

No, the AC7 does not have HDMI to SDI pass-through. It will not do the signal conversion. The SDI version does have SDI loop through. The DP7 will do the signal conversion. The AC7 is a continuation of a monitor like the DP6 but with better screen options and a couple added software features such as the colored focus assist and the 2x zoom as well as another anamorphic lens aspect ratio. The 8-bit LCD and the OLED. By the way, OLED would need to be run for close to two years strait, 24/7 for it to diminish in brightness and even then it would still be superior to a standard LCD.

If you shoot outside, you might want to consider the brightness of these monitors. The new SmallHD OLED is only 250 nits versus the new Marshall V-LCD70MD at 800 nits.
