Today a new website was launched, aimed at Avid editors who are learning FCP.

http://www.avid2fcp.com

The main focus of the site is a forum where industry experts Martin Baker, Jude Cotter, Victoria Parks-Murphy, Mark Raudonis and Shane Ross will be on hand to help with editors' questions as they learn FCP.

To coincide with the launch, Avid2FCP is seeking editors who are about to start learning FCP and would be willing to share their progress in regular blog posts. Closing date for submissions is Friday 6 April.

I suggest checking out the Myths page on this site first. But I don't see why you'd go the other way.

I'm very excited about this as the FCP For Avid Editors APTS book is now out of print, only aviable from PeachPit Press as a downloadable PDF eBook. It's being updated, though, with no known release date. Not to mention that almost 50% of my students (especially here in south Louisiana where the Hollywood film industry is EXPLODING) are in my class to learn FCP fast. They come out of a film school in college, learned on an old Avid system, but the jobs they have to go interview for are for FCP editors. Go figure...

It's NOT an Avid bashing site at all! The simple fact of life is that there are more and more Avid editors having to move to FCP for a varety of reasons. It is a much needed resource. I'm not aware of any trend of FCP editors flocking to Avid. If there is, I'd like to know about it.

I am one of the peeps involved.

We see SO MANY people trying to make FCP behave like an Avid, trying to fit the Avid way of doing things into the FCP world that they end up hating the platform, quitting or just smashing their head against a wall. We wanna help.

A FCP to Avid site would be good too. I think that transition would be the tougher one.

I don't think FCP to Avid would be that bad. I'd certianly only do it with an Avid keyboard though. I agree with working on each NLE as its own and not molding it to the other, so I'd want the Avid keys rather than try to confirm it to FCP setup. I didn't find porting over that bad, just a bit slower at first (of course), but didn't find it too terrible.

cheers.

Going from FCP to Avid for me WAS NOT easy since I was a heavy Mouse User. Avid is much more "Keyboard" based, and this took time. Now though, I am back in FCP, and set up the Keybaord much better and use it like an Avid.

I just signed up on the forum (Zedsdead) and started a post about my major concern for the reason I switched to FCP over Avid, which is the lack of support for the JVC HD100 and poor 720P support overall.

I learned on Avid. Then built my own Premiere system (6.5). Then discovered FCP and went Mac. Of course nearly all of my jobs were w/Avids so I was Avid during the day and FCP nights/weekends for a number of years. I very quickly developed an "Avid" section of my head and a "Final Cut" section of my head and never mixed the two. When I'm on Avid I play to Avid's strengths and when I'm on FCP I play to FCP's strengths.

Now I'm at a place that's FCP, but I'm worried about my Avid skills getting rusty. Which means time to start using the copy of Avid Xpress Pro I have. :)

Either way, I am an FCP user and love it. I was just curious... I do own Xpress Pro though, but have not used it.

ADkimery...you have to post that. I too had that problem...all my day work was Avid, and all my weekend work on short films, spec ads and corporate gigs were FCP, and I had to develope two ways of thinking.

We are both in LA, so I see why that happened...
