New site design (v4) comments and suggestions

I don't normally throw out unfinished ideas or concepts for all to see, but since others here have, I figure I'd see what you fellas thought before I decide to continue down this path or burn it completely. I'm redoing my site and have moved away from table based design, so this one is completely standards based CSS layout. Clean & Simple.

Thoughts?

I think it looks great. I like design that "breathes". It's well organized and easy to read. although you should minimize the use of Latin in the final site. :) One thing--your logo sort of disappears into the page. I think you need something to set it off a bit. Other than that, very well done.

Ah, I like that design better. Barry describes the change well. It's open and organized. The old design was complex. As for the logo dissappearing... You might place it on the background and orient it vertically on the left side. Then it remains in place as the page scrolls. Leave the left side margin for the page content and the logo won't be covered.

Oh, the shaded edges look a little messy. For example, between the quicklinks and newsletter sections. Also, the top margin is a little large. You might want to reduce it just a bit

It looks very good. Like Barry said, it's well-organized and easy to read.

You can get in and get out with minimal effort. Hmmm... am I still talking about websites? :|

While your original site is very cool looking, I have to say I prefer this new design much better. I am a huge fan of the "less is more" principal. I don't like going to a website and feeling lost, this new site doesn't give me that feeling.

Unlike the others I like the logo/site name as it stands. It is in the appropriate place for where my eye will initially track and it clearly indicates who/what I am visiting. I also have no problem with the shading, it seems to flow nicely for me.

Good Job,
Larry

Kyle, you are a great designer, but I must respectfully disagree. The new version is too basic and doesn't show-off your talents. The layout is scattered, the navigation is less than inspiring, and the overall design is boring. It looks more like a blog template than a designer's website. Also, the logo doesn't pop, as Barry said.

Your original design, which I saw a year ago, made me think, "WOW! So Kyle is the graphic designer of the group." This new site is clean and professional, but it doesn't make me think anything. Sorry, but your talents deserve a better showcase than this. Good luck.

I think the term "messy" is wrong. I meant to say that the shaded edges don't look right because they contradict. For example, the shadow for the right edge of the "Latest News" region falls to the left. The shadows for the right edges of the "Quick Links" and "Newsletter" regions fall to the right. There is a mix of left and right falling shadows throughout the page. This is what caught my eye visually.

Hope that helps.

I personally like the newer version Kyle. I say let your Portfolio speak for your work. This new site is clean and polished and simply needs a little organizing:

1. Close the gap between the KSM and the Menu; thats a ton of NEG SPACE

2. Bring everything UP whereas KSM is at the TOP of the PAGE

3. The Portfolio QUCIK links seems a bit much; can the ENVIRONMENTAL and INTERNET links

Go 4 the new version.
The old one is just a little too dark, too grey.
Let's leave the underground... ;-)

Oli
