I forgot, in the cinematography forum of DVXUser, there's a excellent thread on homemade MINI35 for the DVX100 for those who want more information on that subject.
I am wildly impressed with the Marla footage. It looks more film like than anything I've seen from the DVX. The camera lens aspect ratio looks like something we'd see on a big screen 35mm production. The edges of the forms are not sharp like video tends to look. I'd like to know if that was done as a result of the mini35 adapter you built or if it was done in post?
As for the film itself, it seems to be a brief character study of marla from Fight Club. Looks like she's talking about the events in fight club after they've happened from her point of view, etc. Granted, it's an odd approach, but I'm wondering how much is being lost in translation here. (no pun intended)
All in all beautiful footage. My question is, if guys like us can rig something like this and get that kind of quality out of it, how come the big companies aren't setting up more easily workable adapters for us to purchase for our cameras? It's clearly possible to do, so why aren't they doing it?
For the filmlook, it's a combination of different things. We did tweak the camera settings a lot, finally, we push all the parameters down, sharpness to -5, color phase to -5,...everything down. The Gl2 framemode is really not nearly as good as the DVX100 progressive mode but it produces nice soft image which worked really well with our kit.
We did mess the color balance, which helped getting more filmlike colors. In exteriors, DV is often too cold and in interiors too warm.
We did a lot of searching in how to achieve a look in post. We work as photographers most of the time and we also digitally (canon D60) so we had quite the same problem in photo. Pictures would be nice, clean, but not close to some good film with advanced processing. So, we tried many things in Photoshop and later, we simply apply the same process to video in After Effects, no plugin needed. We just play with layers, curves and color balance. I cannot tell you exactly how because it all depends of the scene but no plugin can give you enough control. For us, Cinelook, Magic Bullet,...are just crap, rendering take forever and it's just not clean enough. We had to convert everything to uncompressed AVI to be sure to avoid any compression artifacts before starting grading the shots.
Finally, we had some aliasing problems, hard edges,...to get rid of that, we did upconvert it to HD 720p using algolith plugins and then went back to SD with some tweaking.
We're working on the movie's website where we'll explain everything we did, until then, if you have questions, we'll be pleased to answer, thanks again to everybody
the website for the movie is online. You'll find the teaser, trailer, full-res stills, making-of pictures, deleted scenes,... we're still working on the technical guide (mini35 how-to, post,...), it'll be online monday.
we've just finished our small filmmaking guide based on the experience we got making "Marla.".
You'll find a illustrated homemade MINI35 how-to, shooting tips, post-production tips (how to get the best out of DV), references,...
It's available as a PDF file on the movie's website in the bonus section.
Thanks again to everybody for the nice feedback, you are the reason why we made this guide. We hope you'll find it useful, please send us your comments.
