New SGBlade rig

Hi,

Wayne kindly lent me an SGblade to play with, so I stuck it all together just now. Its impressive, edge sharpness is dead on, and no CA yet. Ive tried to make it, it wont come.

The lenses are some loverly Zeiss ZF, 18, 28, 50, 85 and 100, on loan from a freind.

I am using the Hocus Focus remote on this rig, and due to limited space on the shot rods, I mounted the motor on the mattebox rods, which is a neat way of doing it.

Here is some eye candy.

cool rig.. I'll probably buy your HF unit when it comes out. I got a question though.. why such a huge gear on the focus unit?

Also, no CA on the blade? Is that blade sporting an upgraded condenser, or achromat?

The large gear is to maximise lens throw. There is a smaller one as well, you only use that huge one when you need it. Its because our motor has limited rotation, this bigger gear is needed when using lenses with a longer throw, such as these zeiss ones.

There is a quick change gear hub, the gears click on and click off very easily, so changing between sizes and pitches is almost instant.

This blade does have an upgraded achromat. I hope I was allowed to say that, but there is no CA. There was one tiny fringe on the canon lenses, but that was just the lens. None with the ziesses so far.

Hi Pete,

It was good to see you again and the HoFo in its current stage of development! Man, it looked like a finished product to me and well presented in the custom flight case.

This thing is super accurate and the updates and modifications to the main wheel including the added dampening gives a superb feel to it!

So you let the new SGblade optics outta the bag :)

Oh. Well you didn't say I couldnt mention it, and they did ask a direct question... sorry....

Hope that wont cause a problem?

Sorry :-(

One thing I can say though, the blade is a fantastic bit of engineering, speaking as someone who designs this sort of thing. Very well thought out, and well made. The image is amazing, as we have discussed, edge sharpness and CA are good, and with a good hunk o' glass on the front, this thing is a mean movie making machine. Even with my old Canon FDs I got some very sharp and clean images.

Heres some grabs (canon lenses) not had the chance to get out to shoot much yet, this is just stuff in my house I pointed the camera at.

(Note the piping on the chair at the far right of the frame (its not totaly planar with the can so it cannot be expected to be perfectly sharp, but its pretty good for so close to the edge, considering its not in focus anyway))

Oh and thats not CA on the left of the can, thats light from the TV in the background.

Zacuto's or one that Wayne is designing? There was some mention a while back that he might design a fixed z type riser.

omg, an upgrade..hahah I"m glad I asked :) Put me in line, I want it!

The intechangable gears on the hofo sound awesome, the large gear seems to help clear the mattebox as well, coo.

So ive been trying to make CA. Just got an EX1, so I stuck that on in place of the z7, and the edge sharpness is good, as good as the z7 and A1. No CA as of yet, I pointed it at a lamp, and you would expect there to be a lot of CA on a shot like this, but no.

I will do a high res one tomorrow.

Lens is 85mm Zeiss ZF.

to easliy see CA, you can just shoot a chart or something with black text on a white background, pretty much anything black against a white backround.. also don't forget to color balance, since orange and yellow hues will help mask CA.

Wayne, I'm guessing my SGblade that shipped earlier this morning does not have the upgraded optics? Any idea when the upgrade will be available?
