AT IBC in Amsterdam, Sennheiser launched the new, affordable, MKE 600 gun mic.

Press release is HERE.

More info. is HERE and HERE.

Retail price is, I gather, about £250 - so *very* affordable.

It's battery powered / phantom powered, so you have a choice - but the specs are slightly better if it's phantom powered.

Although it looks like the K6+ME66 it is quite different. My understanding, from someone who has used it, is that it has a "warmer" sound than the K6+ME66.

At this price with this pedigree, IMHO, it should be on everyone's short list for an affordable short gun mic.

I've been using an ME66. It's OK. I just bought a Rode VideoMic Pro. It's OK, and it's small. I think the ME66 is more directional than the Rode, but the Rode gets points for being small. I've owned a MKH416 for a year and during that time BADLY wanted to use it with my GH2 and forthcoming GH3 for run-n-gun. So badly I just bought a MixPre-D to mount underneath.

Thus, I'll consider the MKE 600 if it is at least between the 66/Rode and 416, preferably closer to the 416. Any links to videos? Anybody shoot with one at IBC? That's an appropriate noisy place to test directionality. Perhaps I erred in buying the MixPre-D.

The MKE 600 was only launched at IBC, so it's only been available for a couple of weeks.

I have been told that is has a "warmer" sound than the K6+ME66 by someone who has tried it.
