So I am thinking about how amazing this forums is, and how much information it has to give. How many people are on this, that have extensive knowledge in so many different areas throughout this career, and by asking question you have the oppourtunity to learn so much. In a sense everyone on this forum is a teacher, not only in the proper way on how to setup lights, or cameras, or shoot something, but also in Experience on the Pro's and Con's.

So I was pondering that someone should do a story or documentary on how online forums, or places like these are paving the future for "Unofficial Schools". There are people on these forums that have been through what everyone is trying to do, make a film, or make a career in it, and their knowledge is very extensive. I believe that a forum like this is, in a sense, an Unofficial New School in the modern world. You could build a cirriculam with certain areas to cover, you have homework, or tests, or projects, through the DVXuser Fests, and you have teachers that will answer any of your questions, even if it is the same one over and over and over again.

(There may have been a story already done on one of these, I don't know)

So I conclude what I am saying, by saying, that DVXuser is a great and fantastic way to extended your knowledge on the ever evolving creature that Film is, and to say Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to all of those out there putting time and effort in to answering user's questions!

hmmmm...I think it's a good idea. However, I do not think that self taught, forum education is as thorough as a good film school (depending on what school you attend). It also, of course, depends on the individual and their circumstances. Not evryone simulates information in the same way.

I don't see any reason for limiting your doc to film/tv production though. I mean, the advent of the Internet, user groups and forums has changed the way that everyone acquires information for any filed.

You can learn a lot through books and forums but nothing beats real world experience. Although film school has its place, I would say its not worth the money and you could get a better education interning and then as a PA.

I agree these forums are great, cutting edge stuff is discussed here. I work in a TV station, and teach, and I get more information from places like DVX user than perhaps anywhere else.

But not experience. That you have to get out and do. No book, video, film school, or forum is going to replace that.

So sure, read the forums, learn (I still do), but get out and shoot!

I wrote a research paper for a writing class of mine on this topic. My Thesis was basically the effect that film related forums and video sharing sites (like youtube, vimeo, etc) have had on the independent film community and the films produced. I interviewed like 5 or so people from DVXuser.....it was a very interesting paper to write.
