New Sanken Cos-11D Noise?

I picked up a Sanken Cos-11D last week, and on my first shoot with it noticed a very weird problem. There is a strange repeating hiss every 20 frames on all of my interview audio. It's not really noticeable while the person is speaking, but during gaps or breaths it becomes much more noticeable. I didn't hear it at all during the shoot, so it's all over the dozen interviews we did this week...Thankfully I can remove the noise with Adobe Audition, but does anyone have an idea what would cause this? Here's an upload demonstrating the problem during quiet portions of the interviews, with white flashes to highlight where the sound occurs:

I used the mic with a Sony UWP-D16 wireless unit that I also just bought. I think I ruled out an issue with the wireless unit though - I used a boom with the plug on transmitter for b-roll audio on the same shoot, and I haven't heard any weird sounds on those clips. The receiver was plugged into the hot shoe on a rented FS7 and I routed the audio through the hot shoe. That's the entire reason I bought the Sony wireless unit, I needed a new wireless and have been doing a lot of FS7 work lately. Figured that feature would come in handy.

My final note about this - Since it's almost 2am and this has been driving me nuts, I just re-tested the mic. I don't have access to the FS7 right now, so I ran it through my Tascam-70D. I couldn't find any evidence of the sound during that test, so now I'm even more confused. If it was the FS7 causing the issue, why didn't it affect any of my other audio from the shoot? Anyone have any insight here?

It could be that either the mic is faulty or it does not like the low voltage supply from the transmitter or do you have phantom power switched on your FS7?

Have you wired it correctly or bought the correct one for use with sony systems as I seem to recall that they are wired differently to sennheiser.

This is the sony version and if you have the sennheiser or lectrosonics type that may be the problem: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ktrso_cos_11d_no_accessories_normal_sens.html

We are currently using 50 of them on a TV game show with 48 sennheiser wireless systems and they are excellent mic's.

Yeah, that's definitely the one I have...I can't seem to reproduce the problem without the FS7 though. Sounds great with my Tascam 70D.

Crazy thought...Is there any chance this is a wrist watch? We had the same 3-person crew at every interview. I'll see if one of them was wearing a watch the whole time...Could the Sanken, under the subject's shirt, pick up a ticking watch a few feet away? I feel like I'm going crazy here. It's such a minor and fixable issue, but I spent over $1000 on this wireless unit/lav and these results are not okay.

I'm going to try to get the FS7 to test it with the hot shoe again ASAP. Maybe the hot shoe is introducing some kind of noise? Or maybe the FS7 pre-amps? I'm trying to find some info on that. Most of the info I've found so far is about people using the Sony K2M adapter, but I wasn't using that.

Well, I got my answer. I got in touch with my buddy who shoots with this set up all the time, and he said he just noticed the same issue last week with the FS7 hot shoe and the wireless receiver. I wish I had known sooner...is this a known issue with the FS7 hot shoe? I can't seem to find anything specific about it anywhere.

Thank you Gary for the quick and helpful reply!

This sounds exactly like what I was dealing with. I'm pretty sure the GPS was on, the camera was a rental and came with the default settings. Weird though...one of those posts suggests the issue was resolved in later serial numbers, it's surprising I was able to get a early model this late in the game. The camera goes back Monday, maybe I can test it with GPS off to confirm before I return it.
