New Rode Lavalier Microphone

Interesting. I'd like to see pictures that actually show the size/shape of the thing so we can tell if it's concealable or not.

Hey Guy, I knew you couldn't resist it and I've watched the others.

Have to say you've gotten better with each one, promoting needed confidence to new people in the video world with value added tips .. and improved yr dress sense out of sight.

That's a nice personal voice tone and great sounding lav. One point, as you know it requires a minimum of 1V, so the H1 must be supplying some power to the 3.5mm input.

An agent, a rate card and credits for your crew and tailor are not far off.

Cheers.

They look pretty good, but I'm worried about having the adapter. It's a really cool idea and I like the idea of easily switching for different wireless, but need to see how stable it is before I buy.

Also, the price isn't that great. The same as a Tram.

It seems like just about every audio/video place is backordered until March within the U.S. Anyone know of a retailer that has them?

Maybe DVeStore? They are great mics, as are the PinMics.

That was probably the first place I checked since I saw Guy's review; They're only available for pre-order. From what I gather, the shipment from Rode was delayed and theres a possibility the shipment that's on the way could be held up in customs so a lot of places are anticipating sometime in March. I've got a shoot coming up next week and initially was looking at the Countryman B6 hardwired, but I would love to have that flexibility in the future if I wanted to go wireless, which the Rode affords, without having to buy another mic. I've e-mailed several retailers in the UK asking whether they actually had any in stock and whether they shipped to the U.S. but haven't heard back. On a side note, I spoke with someone at Chuck Levin's and he said they'll have a deal on the Rode lavs when they come in for $210(goes for $249.99 everywhere else)

I just wanted to know whether anyone knew of a place that I wasn't aware of that had them in stock. Videoguys of Australia unfortunately doesn't ship outside of Australia.

I'd try to borrow or rent for the gig, then get the Rode. I've got a shootout with the Rode Lav, and it did pretty well, but I didn't have a B6 to put it up against. I've also got a PinMic review. And even a PinMic song that I did just to be crazy. I recorded everything with the PinMic or Lav, and it sounded surprisingly good. There are other great lavs out there of course. Bit I do like the modular nature of these, and they are much cheaper than a COS11D (which I have too).

Thanks Chad; I did watch your shootout on a thread on DVinfo; It was well done and while the Rode didn't sound the best to my ears, for the price and the flexibility makes it a clear winner for me. I wish I could rent, but the audio rental market here in Hawai'i is so tiny, and those places that do rent know this and their equipment and prices not so great. I might just borrow a friend's Sennheiser G2's and just wait till the shipment from Rode hits the states(hopefully the boat that they're on doesn't go to the bottom of the ocean). These mics are proving just as difficult to find as the GH2 I received.

Pinmic and Lavalier users (i.e. Chad) - can ou review the connector quality? Basically the point where the cable meets the connector - is it rock solid?

It screws on solidly. I haven't had any trouble. I treat my stuff with care, so I haven't tested the boundary of when it will break. But it's a bolt and a screw made out of brass. It's not likely to come undone. How strong is a hard wired connection with a wire covered in plastic? Maybe traditional connectors are more delicate judging by the materials. I think you should decide based on if you like the sound of the lav primarily. Anything can break.
