Hey guys I am a young cinematography student. I just cut together my first reel. Its the compilation of 6 short films I shot in the last year. Some of them have not fully finished the post process, so there is no color correction just keep that in mind.

90 percent of the shorts were shot on the Red One, with red pro prime glass. Keep in mind this is my first attempt at a reel I am not much of an editor haha. Let me know what you guys think. There is kind of a long build up in the beginning introducing the all the different characters from all the films I have shot which I think is kind of fun.

Hope to work with you all one day soon!

your first reel and 90 percent shot on red one? not bad :)

ok the reel:
-its to long, cut it to 2-3min! 2 is better, because there are only 6 shorts in it
-music is to quiet
-why is there not color correction on some? it doesnt care whether is finished or not, do it by yourself. its important for a reel
-there are really nice shots in it, but you have to shorten that
-why is it in 4:3 format?

maybe you can use my reel for an inspiration :)

Mantas,

Thanks for the feed back, much appreciated. The plan was to shorten it down to 2 minutes, I needed to get a copy of it out to this director I am working with which is why this version is longer and some shots are not color corrected yet. Ill definitely make those changes and bring the music up when I do.

Thanks,

I watched the reel through a few days ago, but will comment on a couple of the initial shots, that I just reviewed today.

1) Length. I think shorter is better, especially when you are using material from just a few projects.

2) The initial shot appears to me to be an outtake. I'd look for something that was in the final cut for my 'first impression' shot.

3) Bar scene. The lighting on the man is good, but I think the lighting on the second shot on the woman is less than(For me, there seems to be a lack of fill on the left side of her face. You have the key, and side light, but her left eye sort of sinks into darkness.*). Don't know if there's a better shot of her, but I'd review other shots and place them 'up front'.

*There's an 'emotional' element of lighting, but I don't know that this shot is to 'communicate' a sinister element of something going on in the movie, or not. If it is just a 'bar scene', I think I'd light her a little more. If she's about to take a icepick to mister Swavy, well, then perhaps the lighting is appropriate...

^ I totally know what you mean the bar shot close up is one of the shots Ive already cut in my new and improved 2 and a half minute reel. Im tweaking it a bunch so thanks for the feedback.

yeah you've already heard this but shorter plz
but the lighting is pretty solid man I can at least see all the subject's eyes in almost every shot good job thats 101 of lighting but i see ppl make that mistake every single day a 1000 times over
i feel though you could make some more dramatic choices in your framing
dont go overboard just give the audience something intense to digest at times

whats your going rate?

Thanks for the feedback guys I appreciate it all. I made some major changes. Song length, shots, and color graded.

I also made a simple website and posted a hi res version of my NEW AND IMPROVED REEL! haha

Check it out

(you will need the most recent version of quicktime to play it)

As for going rates, it depends on if you want to rent my gear package but because I'm still new to the game and looking to do more feature film work I am cheap and willing to work with you.
