New reel - 2008

Taylor Rudd

Veteran
I just uploaded an updated version of my reel. It is certainly modest compared to some other recently posted reels, but I'm certainly open to comments and critiques!

I just moved to LA for an internship to fulfill my graduation requirements for May. My hope with this is to show - at the very least - I'm competent enough to lend a hand or two on set :)

Thanks for watching.

Some good stuff in there Taylor. I would recommend adding a job title to your title cards, that way there is no doubt what you do for people who may not get a description when watching the reel.

Maybe consider tightening it up a little, and when cutting try to remember it should exhibit only the best of the best of your work, so if that means your reel will be shorter, than so be it. As an employer I would rather see a short reel stuffed with great material than a long reel padded with just ok material.

Could you email me your contact info? I'll keep you in mind for upcoming projects.

Good point
As somone who' knows what to look for in a reel when hiring a cinematographer, what do you consider to be the "best stuff" on this reel and what is "just ok" material? I'm sure the answer will vary and be open ended.

there's a shot of following closely behind someones feet as their walking. There's somekind of distortion effect going on around the feet. Did you use a lensbaby or was that an effect in post? It was at the 1:05 mark. It also appears again at the 1:44 mark.

thanks

I wasn't referring to Taylor's material specifically when I said most people would rather watch a shorter reel full of great material rather than a longer one with great material and some ok material to stretch it out a little. I think that would apply to anyone, including myself.

Andrew - I will certainly tighten it up during the next week or so. I would like to see it come in around 1:40. That always feels right. I am headed out the door, but I will email you when I return!

Dan - All but 2 or 3 shots were with my Canon XH-A1 and Letus Extreme.

Angelcyk - I've used the lensbaby for still photography, but I thought it would be too limiting for what I wanted to do with bending optics. The project with the manipulated image was all done in camera and was called "With" - I was hired to make a film for an acquaintances senior music recital that was inspired by stories of being in a coma. It was a music, dance and film collaboration with 3 films (from different filmmakers), 3 movements of music, and dance choreography.

Instead of the lensbaby, I bought a 28mm f/2.8 prime and 70-210 zoom. They were beautiful lenses and I hated to take them apart. Alas, I dismantled each, reversed and relocated elements, and built 4 combinations. You can watch my lens tests here: http://vimeo.com/1629598

Thanks for watching!
