New Production Diary from The Hobbit: PJ on 3D, Rigs, and Red Epic

Um....red and blue separate concept art pieces? Speaking as an illustrator and CA'ist, that's completely unnecessary. Really seems like a vanity stunt to flex the high budget of the film. C'mon now, really?

Or maybe, just maybe, there is a tiny, little chance that it could be a joke...

Cool. As someone who doesn't hate 3D but actually likes it, I'm really interested to see this and interested to see how 48fps performs with 3D. I have feeling that framerate will be more natural for 3D than it is for 2D.

I'm really psyched for "The Hobbit", but not for the 3D.

I'm not a big fan of 3D for live-action. I haven't seen a 3D live-action film yet that I thought didn't look "super 2D", but I must say that I think it really works for 3D animations (probably because it's in a 3D environment in the first place). It will be interesting to see if PJ can improve on 3D for live-action, and it looks like he's trying just that (not just with the frame rates).

I thought exactly the same thing. This is some serious budget, watch the second production diary for a glimpse into their location scouting endeavor (crazy).

I wouldn't put it past this crew ...

I love this BTS blog. Its one of the best I have seen. I'm looking forward to seeing what 48FPS will look like. I'm not a 3D hater. Its intresting to see how this old trick is being used to make movies have more depth instend of a cheap trick. Thanks Peter Jackson for letting us see this process before the movie is out. 48 RED EPICS! WOW!!!!

Love it, love it! Definitely one the of the best. I own the King Kong collectors edition, and he also included like 15 hours of the same style BTS blogs. His one of few directors that actually try to give you a deep insight into the making of his films.

First half was like RED commercial.

In a way, I suppose. But if you watch the King Kong prod. diaries then you'll see that he also covers the cameras in one of the episodes (a number of 35mm Panavision's if I remember correctly) - so it's sincere.

It was interesting that they added more color to the set. The production designer said it was because "the red tends to eat color"
But then Peter said they would grade the color almost out of it, which seems to sort of contradicts the previous statement.
Does anyone else find that the Red "eats" (which I would assume means needs) color as compared to film?

The 3d concept art bit was funny, and yes that would be a joke, that many will fall for.

Skating on marbles comes to mind

More options in post is always better I suppose.

I've heard people say that Red sacrifices color for resolution, that's why things like the Alexa, F3 and new Canon C300 are viable candidates for filming. If Red cameras were good at doing everything then there'd be no reason to use any other camera.

It's actually the mirrors in the 3d rig not the cameras that "eat" color.
