Not much of an upgrade... guess they are waiting for the G5. I'd guess it won't be TOO long. They managed to fit the G5 into the iMac, which is pretty narrow. I bought a 15" Powerbook 14 months ago, and the new ones aren't a big improvement yet. Which is ok with me. I've bought 9 Macs in the last 12 years, and 14 months is pretty good to still be fairly current. I DO hope the G5 is out by the end of the year. If I've had a good business year, I like to buy a new computer in Nov or Dec for tax purposes. I absolutely LOVE the Powerbook. If I had to choose between the Powerbook and the wife, it would be a tough choice...

Why wouldn't you get a new one? The current prices make them very tempting, but my wallet won't allow me to upgrade right now.

I guess cause the extra $300 could go into a better mic or some other gear. I have a budget of $3000, I need to spend wisely. Is there really any benefit to the newer one? The new trackpad thing doesn't count, that could be added to the next OS update and i think you can get a 3rd party app to make that happen. 512MB ram is pretty cool. I'd max it out with a 1 gig stick, but i read that the max is only 1.25 gig ram. So would my extra 256 be wasted? It comes with iLife. Well all macs come with that same software, but now they call it iLife. It would be better if it came with iWork. Bluetooth 2.0. I don't have anything I can sync with. And I won't be getting a wireless mouse or keyboard anytime soon. The graphics card is the same. There isn't FW800.
The upgrade isn't that much. MHz wise, i doubt I'll be able to tell the difference, coming from a 400Mhz G3 Pismo (but i do have a dual G4 867) I need to be convinced. And don't say wait for the G5 dual core thing, cause that is Revision A grade material and that'll be full of bugs - in the way of HEAT and TIGER being all new.
You can buy a $29 mouse that scrolls too. But I'd still rather have my 14 month old PB than a brand new PC. But after the G5 and Panther comes out, there won't be a comparison. Also, one advantage to the new ones is that Apple finally got smart and started putting 512mb ram in to start. Wish they had done that with the Mac mini too.
Man.. I've been an apple user for all my life.. don't get me wrong, I love my powerbook too.. but I'm starting to see the light with the power of the PC.. I'm a music guy and I've been using logic, and ableton live on my mac to compose.. until this past summer, I bought a PC because I saw how many effects you could run on in ableton at the same time.. I love OSX, and I love final cut pro and after effects, but I'm starting to wonder if I will ever be able to run these applications at full speed on a mac laptop.. and it just seems like apple is just slow with this ****... by the time the g5 powerbooks come out, it seems like Athlon will be way ahead with their new 64 bit processor.. and they will be 1/2 the price..
And this is all coming from a die-hard mac user.. sadly..

Die Hard ;D I see what you mean. But what we are paying for in a mac is a better all around machine (ie, virus free, OS/Software is amazing, top notch hardware out of the box, IMHO Last Forever) Well not quite forever. I've had my Pismo 400MHz since 2000 (that's 4 years) I can still use Final Cut Express to cut up simple movies and produce web sites and email and browse. But it is time to retire that machine cause I've been in OS 10.3.4. That's as far as this machine can handle and besides I'd like to run my copy of FinalCutHD on a portable machine. But damn that Pismo still looks killer despite its slowness and it still performs.
I think I'll be getting the 1.33 12" Powerbook and hope that it ages that gracefully. The newer features of the 1.5 powerbooks don't justify the extra $300 I'll be spending. Sure it comes with more memory (512mb) but I'd be removing that 256mb chip that "ISN'T" soldered on to the logic board, selling it, and replacing it with a 1 Gig chip. Bluetooth? eh...
That trackpad scroll deal is also ??? I rather use a mouse anyway. Now if the new PB came with FW800 and Gigabit Ethernet or even if they made the backlit keyboard standard for all models - then maybe I'd get the newer ones.
I could spend that saved $300 on a Mic (4073a) or a mixer or/and the list goes on and on.
Even though I sound set - the one thing that is still drawing me to the New PB's is the faster Harddrive. 5400rpm. THAT makes a difference in overall system performance. Shoot. :-/

hehe.. well.. I'm a realist too. [/quote]
Friends do not let other friends buy from Intel!!!
Dude, this morning I had to swap my PC at work(AAA), because it was badly ridden with the usual PC transmitted diseases. It happens all the time at my work, and I apparently I wasnt fast enough this time to save my computer. Our IT couldnt do jack sh*t to save the drive, and the former PC had to get reformatted, and now I have to reprogram a lot sh*t in my new one to settings I had previously. My boss is going to love my numbers today. Its bad enough my day job sucks(insurance), but the computers too? Good old Billionaire Bill--owns half of the world and cant spend a dime to keep up with the innovation in OS X, and he cant keep his computers disease free.
as for the Athlon chips being faster than G5's--Hell, owning 80% of the computing market share, your computers BETTER be faster than the competition!! What's sad is that they're not that much faster and the fact he hasnt killed the competition speaks volumes. I'll stick with underdog whose not that very far behind with a better look and personality-Apple.
Trust me.. this isn't a discussion where my heart is.. because it's definitely with apple.. I know the woes of the pc.. esspecially the virus ****.. I won't even put my PC on the 'net..
But honestly.. Running VST plugins in Ableton on a mac vs a pc is like night and day..
For music it's the pc for now, for video and EVERYTHING else it's the mac.. best of both worlds, and the best options in terms of price.
Back on the topic of the New PB's. I really think they have made valuable improvements that's worth the money. Now the monster 17" PB is more powerful than the 15". The only difference in the older models was screen size. I'm typing this on 12" iBook G4 {800mhz} and just dreaming of the new 17 PB with the ability to hook up the 30" display * note The stinkin Power Mac G5 requires a $450 Ultra video card *
Gigabit ethernet, FW 800, 100 gig 5400 HD, and digital audio. I would call this a pretty big difference. And I didn't mention the other gadgets like the new scrolling feature, Built in Bluetooth, and the hard drive motion sensor.
It will be interesting to see a PB G5.
Also PC's do have a place in this world. To give us headaches and give us something to make fun of. Such is their lot.
